We vacation every year in St Maarten and have always found Thrifty Car Rental to be good. Their cars are better than most rental places in St Maarten (for dollar vs. car) and they are right down the street from the airport. Also, their transfer buses are quick. We used to use other places (Dollar, for one) but found the cars could be pretty shabby. Thrifty has always given us nice cars.

The cheapest rate I've found so far is with Budget- even though I have accounts at Hertz and Avis. I've rented from Budget several times years ago in my hometown and never had a problem. Would anybody happen to know if they are a reputable company on this island? I would like to save money but I would also like to feel comfortable and safe.

All three of the franchises you have mentioned are well run, though the privately owned local island firms are usually less expensive - but the insurance (which is essential and costs extra from ALL companies)- is usually with a higher accidental damage excess/franchise/deductible (call it what you will) when renting from the independent operations.
No matter who you rent from, be sure to go right round the the vehicle very carefully with the Agent when checking it out, and make sure that any existing damage, scratched paintwork or deficient items etc. is noted before you acept the car, otherwise you could have (possibly expensive) additional charges when you check it back in.
