Car rental on STT

Hertz has a weekly car rental rate almost $100 less than Dependable for the week we need. I have heard good things about Dependable, but less about Hertz. Any pros and cons with either? Thanks!

FWIW, you cannot take rental cars on the ferry to St John. I believe this is true for most rental companies.

I have read that if you try and take a STT rental on the ferry, the guys on the ferry will take down your plate # and report you to rental company and you will get a big fine.

Hertz is the only one that will not allow its cars to go on the ferry to STJ. The rest do but check with your agency on what their policies are regarding breakdowns while you are on St. John.

Thanks for the correction, carry! That explains the cheaper rate quoted by Hertz.

Thanks for the info re the ferry to St. John. But, if we do not plan on taking the rental car to St. John, are there any other "downsides" to using Hertz over Dependable (or any other rental firm)?

Check out this message board; it is very informative and has had threads on car rental places

Hmmh... we've rented from Hertz before and we did go to St. John but I don't recall any fuss or fines. Things may have changed but otherwise our experience with Hertz was excellent. We mostly rent from Budget who usually has the lowest prices on line.

Maybe you just didn't get caught. :)

I have read that the ferry boat operators are the ones who actually report you to Hertz.

They can easily spot the cars due to the barcodes on the windshields. They let Hertz know and you get something like $1000 fine. I'd imagine they get a cut for doing so.

Plus, if you were ever to have a problem while on St John, you would also be found out.
