Car rental necessary in Barbados?

We are looking at staying at the Bougainvillea or Little Good Harbour this December and are wondering if a car rental is necessary. There will be four of us (including a 3 and a 7 year old). When we stayed in the T&C last winter, we had a car for our entire trip and used it to visit a different beach every day. is the bus system reliable or should we bite the bullet and rent a car?

Also, are there any agencies that would drop off at the hotel? If we did rent a car, we'd probably only do so for 3 or 4 days.

I figured we should get a car, I just wanted to confirm. Will any of the car rental companies drop the car off at your hotel?

We loved the Turks and Caicos so I am glad to hear that Barbados will be just as exciting!

Yes, some car rental companies have desks at major hotels. In our travels I have found the rates lower at the airport because of the competion amonst the major firms, i.e. Hertz, Alamo,Budget, etc. But you sometimes find a local firm at a hotel with better rates at your hotel or one very close by. you can email your hotel and they should be able to give you the best information.

Just got back from Barbados. There were three of us, all adults and we did not rent a car. They drive on the left side of the road there just like the British and there are roundabouts. It seemed pretty treacherous to me. We had a car and driver one day to drive us around the Northern part of the island. However, we did not go to any other beaches but rather stayed at our hotel with all of its assorted benefits for the beach. It didn't seem necessary to go anywhere else.

Buses were very frequent though often full. the only time we had a problem is when we were waiting one night for the bus from our hotel (just outside of Holetown) to the Fish Pot and we waited a really long time. But the bus did drop us off right at the front door.

I think you need to be a really good driver to rent a car in Barbados. I personally wouldn't do it. Also, you can get a taxi right at the airport. I think a taxi at the airport charges per trip whereas I caught a ride with my friends back to the airport and they had a service who charged by the person. That ended up being a bad deal for me as we all basically paid for our own trips rather than by the shared ride.

Taxi from the airport after a trip is a great idea, less stress finding the way to the hotel. However Barbados is such a beautiful island with lots to experience other than the beach and renting a car would be less stressful in getting around. Most car rentals would deliver to your hotel, drive-a-matic, courtesy -rent- a car and Dwayne's Barbados Car rental ( google these for more details) my experience with dwayne's Barbados car rentals was very good I know they deliver to guests whether hotel or airport, and the always have competitive rates.

Good luck and loads of fun on your trip.

You can hire a driver/guide in Barbados for a cheap price-We had the same driver for several days, and older man named Fred. Loved him. I'd avoid driving- roads seem narrow fast & chaotic. We went with kids too! Make sure to see the Wildlife park! And Roots and Rythyms is really fun! Better than it looks online. Flower cave is a must, not so much for the flower cave but the area has some great views right across & cool souvenirs; Little clay bajan Christmas ornaments they'll date for your tree, etc. Check out Oistens, and Waterfront Cafe has an great Bajan Buffet on Tuesdays. Foods great. Calabaza is a FABULOUS daytrip- Even my little one who could not swim got to snorkel with turtles. Very safe. Avoid the Riding Center. AVOID the riding center. . Have fun in Barbados!

We usually rent a car in Barbados for 3/4 days and find it one of the easiest islands to drive around. But then we are not from the US or Canada and are quite used to driving either manual shift or automatic and left or right hand drive cars. Rental car was delivered/picked up from the hotel. The car gave us freedom to drive around the island and see the things we wanted in our own time and in the evenings go to various restaurants etc.

Hi,

If you only need a taxi to drop you off, you can always check http://www.taxi2airport.com/transfer...nal-airport/to

I used it for a trip last winter with my wife and daughter and it worked great.

Regards,

I don't think you would necessarily need a car at the Bougainvillea, but I would rent one if I was staying at the Little Good Harbour.

Barbados is such a sunny island and the beaches are wonderful. You are going to love it!
