Car rental in Puerto Rico

Will be in Puerto Rico for 9 nights, starting in San Juan, and then going to three other locations. We don't feel a need for car in San Juan, particulary since there is no parking at our hotel, El Convento. Would like to rent one our last day there, and keep it for the rest of the trip.

Would appreciate recommendations for reliable rental companies. Should we make reservation now, or is it OK to wait until we arrive?

Thanks, in advance. Florence

We are in PR right now and did rent a car for a few days. The hotel helped with the reservation since we did not do it ahead of time. All companies are here - Hertz, Avis, etc. We waited till we got here and almost did not get a car, Hertz and Avis were sold out. So I would reserve ahead of time. Ended up renting through Enterprise. All went well.

Hi Florence, You will definitely want to rent a car. The publicos are terrible to rely on, and you really have to be a local to figure it out. The only thing you should school yourself on is the toll tags and booths. I got a ticket when I returned home because I went through the wrong toll booth (not a lot only $30 something. Make sure the rental car people tell you that they include the toll responder, mine didn't and I paid tolls all through Puerto rico, but I was ok with that if it helped the economy. I was a first time traveler there last March 31-April 9. It is well worth getting a car and there are some good deals. I rented through budget, but then I am not under 25. You will see so much more, make sure to get a GPS that has Puerto Rico, very confusing otherwise because they measure in KM's. Don't miss Dona Juana falls, it is amazing! Also not too many people know about the natural mineral springs there, very cheap but don't go sunburned! You will not get your monies worth. They have fresh fruit available and it is a very nice updated facility. If you have any more questions, I am new to this site but just became a member so that I could respond to your angst.

definitely rent in advance and you can usually get a good or better deal online, I paid $14 a day for a ford focus, good deal great little car, and I am a bigger woman so I was pleasantly surprised.

Just returned. Rent, but be prepared for traffic any time. We rented from Dollar and they are further from tithe airport than some and took 35 min for the shuttle. Choose one closer to the airport.
