Car rental in Caymans

We are going in the middle of Feb. and staying at Villas of Galleon. I know it's in a central location, but my question is, is there enough to explore to make it worth renting a car for a week. I haven't checked out prices yet, but sometimes a weekly rental can ended up costing the same as lets say renting for 4 or 5 days.

Meta,
I would rent a car for the week, if for no other reason than convenience! We rented a mid-size Toyota from Dollar car rental, and tax and everything for the week was $217.00. There's lots to see on the island, like the north and east side, as well as many snorkel stops along the way.

Thanks Sandy.

I agree, rent a car for the week, particularly if you enjoy dining out and exploring the island.

(And, if you're scuba divers, by far the best diving in on the East End of Grand Cayman -- quite the trip to diveshops, but well worth it.)

Sandy, we were quoted $311 for the week from Dollar for a Toyota Corolla. Did you have some type of discount?

Sandy Dec 27th, 2003 02:10 PM

Meta,
We didn't have any type of discounts. We didn't accept the insurance coverage, because our credit card takes care of that.(Is insurance coverage part of that price?) I'm wondering if the rates are higher since your going in high season. We were there Dec6 -13th, right before high season. Also, I booked on-line and got a better price than when I called Dollar. Hope this helps!

Thanks Sandy. That was the online price without insurance. Your right, I think the prices are higher now.

Meta,
I did some checking, and some car companies do raise their rates during high season. Check out www.caymanislandsdiscounts.com and look at the car rental section. Avis has a car, can't remeber the name, for $239 a week after January 3rd. It even mentioned on that site that their prices are the same year round.

Sandy, checked out Avis. We can rent a Honda Civic for a week for $289, which is a pretty good rate compared to other prices I've gotten. Thanks for letting me know about that site.

Hi Meta. I think you can get away with doing a car for 4 or 5 days since you are so centrally located. You can see the whole island in less than that amount of time. We walked to most everything from V)OG but it was nice to get to those further away places (e.g. Calypso Grill etc) when we did have a car. If you decide to get one for the week though Andy usually offers 1 day free. Also, I found Andy's to be the cheapest even for our 1 day rental.
