Captive to resort in St. Croix?

We are considering St. Croix for our April vacation but do not want to be captive to the resort, as in the Dominican Republic. We like to rent a car for the week and see the island and go to different restaurants, is this recommended here? Thanks for your advice!

Susan,
I've been vacationing on St Croix for the last 15 years. By all means rent a car and see the island. Use normal caution and you will be fine. When I say normal, all I mean is don't go into a deserted area at one in the morning looking to buy drugs. If you look for trouble anywhere you will find it. St Croix is beautiful and I've never had a moments unease in all the years I've been vacationing there.

I actually thought I had written the response above! By all means go and have a great time - there are wonderful restaurants to enjoy in Christiansted and many things to see and do. I have been going to St. Croix for 13 years and agree with the poster above completely. You could only be captive at your resort if _you_ didn't want to explore.

in no way do you need to be held captive on St. Croix. Get out, enjoy the great island and sample all the excellent dining. Just like any other island, don't leave common sense at home

Susan,
I took my mother, my two aunts and uncle and my boyfriend a few years ago. After consulting various websites, I was sure we'd all come back in body bags...we didn't, we had fun and we got around. Like anywhere else, be cautious. We stayed at the Divi Carina, so the Islands only real night life (the casino) was across the street.

Not much in the way of calm sandy beaches though,so if that is what you prize, you might want to consider somewhere else.

D
