Canopy Tour in Jamaica
We just got back yesterday from Beaches Negril. We had a great time. The resort does not deserve the bad reviews it has gotten on trip advisor.
Anyway, I just wanted to let anyone out there who is traveling to Jamaica and is looking for a fun tour know about the Chukka Canopy tour. The offer the tours in Montego Bay and in Ocho Rios. We took our 3 kids (ages 10, 11 and 13) and had a blast. It was the highlight of our trip. They put harness and helmet on you and then take you into the rainforest where you travel on 9 different transverses (sp?) across the tree tops and across rivers. I don't remember the exact lenghts but some are short and some are longer. The longest one takes about 20-25 seconds to get across and you are going about 35 mph. The scenery and experience is breathtaking. I'm afraid of heights and did fine. The guides are very well trained and your safety is their number one concern. I think the website is www.chukkacaribbean.com. I think they also do this in Costa Rica. It's so cool! |
This activity was indeed " born " in Costa Rica by a Canadian ...... ( copying scientists studying the rainforest ) Nearly 15 years ago in C.R. It is also in Dominica and St.Lucia ( aerial trams )
|
It was, and the Jamaican guides at Chukka went to Costa Rica to train.
There is a large Jamaican community in CR, on the Caribbean coast, actually. |
Of course..... , Limon , and surrounding areas is mostly English speaking as well.....the vibe is completely different from the rest of the country . A really cool history . ( p.s. Liza , I think you would love Costa Rica if you have not allready been ! )

I am going to Couples Negril on Saturday and really want to do the canopy tour. Does anyone know if this is a full day tour (ride there, do the zip lines and ride back) or can you combine it with something else that is close to where the canopy tour is (Appleton tour, Mayfield falls, etc)?
|
I topped a recent post for you from when I was researching. I do not think that you can combine any other tours since Chukka only provides the transportation. You could check with them to be sure.
|
Thanks brenandg! Did you end up doing the canopy tour (if so was it really 2 hours to get there) or something else? Impressions on either?
|
We did not end up doing the canopy tour although it is still something I would like to do in the future. A week before we left I got a wicked viral infection turned bronchitis which I passed on to my husband. Although he hung tough, he felt pretty lousy the first few days. Not really up to being in the hot sun in July without a place to cool off. Maybe next time!
If it is something you really want to do, I would deal with the ride. Can't help but wonder though why Chukka wants the monopoly on the transportation. Even if they only offered the tour at certain times, you would think that they would allow anyone to do the tour. |
I think, based on recent reports, that they ahve two locations for the tour now, one Negril-Whitehouseish and one Ochi-ish.
Not 100% sure but people in very diff parts of JA have said their rides were 2 hours or less. |
