Caneel Bay, St. John

Hi! We are going to St.John's for my sister's wedding in February. I've been looking for info on the islands too. If you find anything interesting I'd love to know.

I've been to St John and have seen Caneel Bay, standing on the road, staring and drooling.

An outstanding choice! Try (I believe) a fairly recent Conde Naste Traveler magazine...yes,I believe they were one of the ten best beaches in the Caribbean.

Anyway, you cannot possibly go wrong. It is outstanding!

Enjoy!

Angela, also click on "Personal Tips" here in Fodors. Select St Johns and hotels o/$200. There is a good description of Caneel Bay.

My wife and I spent a week at Caneel in December. The grounds and beaches are beautiful, the food was terrific (especially the exotic cuisine at the Equator) and the service was impeccable! However, the windows cannot be closed to shut out the sound of noisy children and loud adults, both of which we had for neighbors. See if you could request a room with more privacy.

My wife had planned to go there for our Honeymoon in Oct '95 but two weeks before our wedding a hurricaine shut it down (we did re-group and have a wonderful time in Barbados). We hope to make it there some time. In response to your request for information, we are friends with a couple who did Honeymoon there for a week (July '95) and LOVED IT (including the food)! One of the restaurants was closed when they were there (seasonal/restoration ??). You may want to check on the status of the restaurants. Also, the ocean front rooms are the only air-conditioned units. This is significant for a few reasons. 1) temperature (you may not care); 2) Windows. The ONLY negative that our friends spoke of was the fact that the lack of windows resulted in a significant mosquito problem in the rooms. You may want to inquire as to the seasonality of the bug issue. But I'm sure they would so go under any circumstances.

Best of luck and congratulations!!
