Caneel Bay is one of the finest hotels anywhere. Your travel agent couldn't be more off the mark. We were there last year, 10 years ago, 12 years ago, and on our honeymoon 29(gulp!) years ago.
Friends of ours also travel there yearly and have no complaints.

Cathy: I was just in St. John last week (and had a great time). We did not stay at Caneel Bay but did visit the resort and it's beaches. I actually have mixed feelings about the resort. Of the parts I saw...beaches, main lobby, resturants, grounds, the resort was very nice. I did not see the rooms however. My opinion is that if you are going to visit all of the awesome beaches outside of Caneel Bay, why pay their high prices??? I would recommend renting a house/condo walking distance to town. It is probably much more affordable and you'll have the options of all of the resturants of Cruz Bay without always having to catch a taxi to town. Just my opinion though. If money is no object, than Caneel Bay is very nice. Feel free to contact me for more info.
Run down? Boy, someone is way off the mark! Maybe because there were no TV's, no phones, no a/c ... the grounds are not seeded and sodded and manicured .... Can't imagine someone coming away with that impression even up until Marilyn and the subsequent turn over to Rosewood!

What a hoot!! I'd love to see a place that this travel agent thought was grand!!

Your travel agent is way OFF! This is one of the 2 tops resorts on beautiful St. John USVI and it is lovely. The service is excellent and they are currently in the process of installing air conditioning in a few of the rooms. You need to request A/C when making your reservations. Go...Caneel Bay is worth it!!!!
