Caneel Bay general questions

My husband and I are staying at Caneel Bay in St John next week for our 1st wedding anniversary.
I just had some general questions regarding the resort and area:
Is the 'downtown' area of St John within walking distance of the hotel, or would we have to take a taxi? Are the taxi fares outrageous (should we rent a car?..we're only there for 4 nights)

Also- do the hotel rooms have refrigerators?
I'm thinking if we have food/drink that needs to be chilled if we would be able to or not.

Any other advice/words of wisdom would be a great help!
Thanks

Happy Anniversary!

Town is not close enough to walk from Caneel, but the cabs are always right there-- and they're very inexpensive (not more than about $6-8 for the 2 of you). Sometimes the "cabs" are little open-sided jitney-type things with other folks-- cute and fun. We found the food mediocre at best at Caneel,by the way (but keep going back bec. we love the snorkeling and the beautiful beaches-- and there are a number of good restaurants in cruz bay)

My memory is that there's a mini-fridge in the rooms. (there's also a very nice "tea" at the great house in the afternoons. Nice pastries and iced drinks-- complimentary)

While the grounds of Caneel are great I would rent a car for one or two days just to see the rest of St. John. St. John is a beautiful island and I think you should see all of it since you're right there. Drive all the way to East End, it's not that far.

I have three suggestions:
1) Rent a vehicle - You are spending good coin to stay at a world class resort....spring for the extra $200 to give you the flexibility to get out and see the island. Part of the fun of STJ is the drive around the island with one, sweeping, breathtaking view after another!
2) Hit all the North Shore beaches! - Tell us which one was your favorite....all are unique and appeal to everyone! Francis Bay beach is my favorite....and less traveled than Trunk, Cinnamon and Hawksnest.
3) Go to Woody's! - Yes, it can be a bit much for some people....but my wife and I love their Happy Hour! Great service....great drinks....great prices and we love the shark bites and conch fritters!
4) (I know I said 3...but now I am on a roll) Drive out to the East end of the island to Shipwreck Landing for a bite to eat and drinks....let the Bananaquits eat pure cane sugar out of the palm of your hand. Drive back to Cruz Bay via Centerline Rd and take in the fabulous view atop Chateau Bourdeaux overlooking Hurricane Hole. Amazing!

Have a great time....please take a few minutes and submit a trip report upon return!

We just stayed at Caneel Bay for our honeymoon first part of August. We absolutely loved the resort, but also knew what to expect prior to arriving. (No phones, tvs, clock, radio & shuttle buses). We expected all this and were very pleased with the peace and quiet.

I would download the resort map and request via email the general area you'd like your room to be. For example, we requested Hawksnest prior to arrival. Also, I requested a refrigerator in the room as they do not have any.

I found the service to be great. We always smiled and politely asked for help (it is not like service at 5* resorts in the states).

The beaches at Caneel are heavenly (Scott was our favorite) but I do agree that one day seeing the other beaches is a good idea. Also, go into town for dinner - Stone Terrace & Tage are fabulous.
