Cancun, Mexico
 

I have a family vacation planned to Cancun, Mexico from December 17th through December 23rd. Has anyone returned in the past week or so that can tell me what condition the Cancun is in right now. I want to be able to go sightseeing, shopping etc., but I don't know whether I should go to Cancun now or cancel. I can't seem to find any information

Cancun itself is still in pretty bad shape. The areas south of Cancun---Talum, Riviera Maya, seem to be making a come back. Are you sure your flights are still going? I"ve been reading a LOT of people not being made aware their flight was cancelled. Call and check. Where are you planning to stay?

We are staying at the Royal Sunset in Cancun. Do you have any idea of what is going on there? I will check with US Air to see if the flight is still scheduled. Are the airlines cancelling flights because Cancun is so bad?

A lot of the airlines are cancelling because so many people have cancelled their trips and the flights are not full. Also, Cancun airport only has one terminal open. Have you contacted your hotel to see what the conditions are?

"• About four miles of Cancun's 15 miles of sugary beaches were decimated and another five-plus miles suffered erosion. But five miles at the north end of the hotel zone actually gained ground. A $20 million beach restoration project is due to begin in a month. As of midweek, about 5,500 of the resort's 28,000 rooms have reopened, and officials forecast close to 12,000 will be habitable by Dec. 20. Some observers expect high-season discounts to rekindle demand."

Do yourself a favor and don't visit Cancun, but go further south to Playa del Carmen and even further south. South of Playa del Carmen got only slight damage from Wilma. Cancun is very commercialized and party central compared to the rest of the Mayan Riviera area.
