Canadian money exchange ??
 

Hi my husband and I are finally headed to Grenada in Nov ... I can't wait !!! Just wondering about money. Is it best to convert to East Carib dollars before you go, should we take American, or will they take our Canadian $$ and exchange it at the airport or a bank down there. I know we ran into problems at the bank in New Hampshire last time we were there they wouldn't take our Canadian $$. Just wondering what we should do ? Thanks

The cheapest and most convenient way to obtain local currency is a debit card at a local ATM.

The bank in NH would not take your Canadian dollars any more your local establishments in Vancouver and Victoria would not take our US dollars. You might convert a hundred Canadian just to have some change in your pocket when you land.

Most establishments in Grenada will take US dollars, but not Canadian as much. I'd either take money out of an ATM or (if you have it or can get it easily and cheaply) simply bring US currency. It's highly unlikely you can even change your currency to EC$ before you leave. I've never seen a bank that hold that currency.

But the course you take also depends on whether you're staying in a resort or not. If you're renting an apartment or villa, then you'll need plenty of currency. If staying at a resort, you might not need much at all.

Check on line or with your bank ahead of time to find out what local banks will take accept your debit card, and also make sure your PIN will work. (In some countries you have to have a 4 digit PIN) I agree ATM’s are usually the most convenient way to get cash. I agree with DougStarlings that it is useful to some some cash on hand when you arrive, in small bills. You can get ECD at a currency exchange in Canada. I use Global Currency Exchange, which guarantees a cheaper exchange rate than the bank.

Both Royal Bank and Scotiabank are well established down there. Give one of their local Canadian branches a call and you will get better than hearsay!
