We have been to Cancun twice and stayed at the Camino Real and the Omni Cancun. Both were wonderful, don't know about the Moon Palace. As for the water, it's the most clear, beautiful turquiose we have seen anywhere. Good luck with your planning.
The Cancun Ritz Carlton is the place to be. Luxury and excellent service. The pools are wonderful. The club floor offers spectacular snaks and bevs throughout the day and with the personal concierge it was worth the extra $.We only left the resort once for a trip to the hot spots.

cancun has clear blue water with some waves but we also went after a storm in the gulf of mexico and the water had a lot of seaweed in it. watch the weather for hurricanes and storms which can greatly affect the quality and clarity of the water. Never heard of Moon palace. The Marriot and Sunset Suites are really nice. Always haggle with the taxi drivers and dont exchange your money at the airport. Your best rates will be downtown.

We have been to Cancun twice and loved it. We stayed at the Sun Palace and the Beach Palace they are a chain of the moon Palace we went to the moon palace once to check it out and it was beautiful. The best I can remember the beach wasn't as big as the other places but the hotel was real nice we are getting ready to go in 3 weeks for the 3rd time we are taking our whole family. They went last time with us and they loved. You will have a great time.

Went to Cancun for the 1st time in May '99. Stayed at the Grand Carib Real. Beautiful water and beach (powdery!).
Absolutely gorgeous hotel, too.

Been to Puerto Vallarta; not so nice water and beach. Could your friends be confusing the coasts?

RE: taxi comments. If you are in the hotel zone, you don't need a taxi except maybe for the airport, if you haven't purchased a package air/land deal. There are tourist buses that cruise up and down the hotel strip almost 24 hours a day. There is likely a stop withing 1 block of any hotel in the hotel zone. They cost about 50 cents per person and are perfectly safe.

Don't bother changing money at all, except for a couple of bucks for the buses. Everybody will take American money, and many of the big clubs (a la Hard Rock) may ONLY take American money. Even the buses will take dollars, but you get your change back in pesos and I can never figure if it's right or not so I always use pesos on the bus. If the Moon Palace is all-inclusive, (and I think that it is) you won't need much cash unless you choose to leave the resort.

The Moon Palace is an All Inclusive hotel, close to Playacar, 40 minutes from Cancun. Try to search about Playa del Carmen, there are new wonderful hotels, this is the best place now in Cancun, like Royal Hydeaway, or Royal Maeba, which are great too, and also all inclusive. This new zone is better than Cancun, that suffer a lot last October with the huracaines.
Even though the Moon Palace is an excellent hotel.
