Can anyone recommend accommodations in St. John?

We are considering St. John as a vacation spot.

We want an oceanfront condo, with a pool on the grounds, porch is nice, two bedrooms. We are not fancy resort people. If it is clean, tastefully decorated, and quiet - that's for us!

Any recommendations?

Anyone at all out there been to St. John?

I just got back from St. John--you will love it. However, I suggest renting a villa. They are private and clean. I stayed with Destination St. John in the Jazz Villa, however, there are many you can choose from.

Nancy,
As has been posted on here many times, there is not alot in the way of beachfront or oceanfront accomodations on St John. The island is 2/3 national park and most of the beaches fall under the protection of the park. (This is a very good thing, IMHO)
There are condo's in Cruz Bay, small complexes, like Lavender Hill, Coconut Coast, Serandip and Cruz Views. Of these only Coconut Coast is "oceanfront". They are on a small rocky beach, are clean, comfortable and the complex does have a small pool. You can check them out at www.coconutcoast.com
There are literally dozens and dozens of private homes and villas for rent. Most of them are hillside and have spectacular views.
Renting a vehicle is pretty much a necessity on St John. Taxi's are expensive and you will want to see the island.
St John is different from many other islands where you can park yourself at a resort or your condo on the beach and not move for a week. I greatly prefer it but it's not for everyone.

Thanks for the replies - they greatly help, but what exactly is a villa? I keep seeing things about them. I know what a condo/apartment is; I know about a hotel. Villas are a new one to me.

A villa is a house, not anything more complicated than that. You can rent anything from a modest 1 bedroom bungalow to a huge 6 bedroom house. All fall under the category of "villa".
You can get an idea of what's out there by going to http://www.caribbeanvilla.com/ and looking at some of what's available.

Gallows Pt is as close as anything to what you're seeking. Not cheap, but very, very nice and convenient(its in Cruz Bay). One of our favorite places. Website is http://www.gallowspointresort.com/

If you are looking for a 2 bedroom/2bath try www.lavenderhillsuites.com. It is perfect for a family and is very spacious. Very few condos are ocean front in St. John but LH has beautiful ocean views!

Try the Maho condos. we stayed in the camp grounds but their condos are great. They now have several locations. Some are ocean view....but you will need a car. We loved St. John and we basically did do NOTHING. Beach, snorkle and eat.

Check out The Estate Lindholm. Its right next to the national park and has beautiful views. There is not a seperate bedroom but there is aloft. It is a small inn maybe 12 or so rooms. They have nice balconies. There is a small charming pool area.If you are not the resort type you should check it out.It is so close to the beaches as well. It is as you described clean tastefull and quiet. The grounds are lovely with hummingbirds all around. We cant wait to go back. They have a web site. I believe it is www.estatelindholm.com
