calm water low touristas

Hi guy, I am looking for a new destinatio hoping someone can help. Favorite place in the world-AC, Belize. Looking for a similar place that has calm waters-perhaps like in belize protected by reef and that is not to overun with tourists. I have looked into Turks & Caicos?? Any feedback. Are the beaches nice, and is the water calm?? Thanks

If you want to get away from it all, hit the Out Islands of the Bahamas -- especially the less traveled ones. My last vacation was to Cat Island in the Bahamas; we stayed at Fernandez Bay Village. The entire 50 mile long island has a population of a couple thousand, with accomodations for maybe a couple hundred visitors. The beaches on the west side (Exuma Sound side) are calm, clear, and virtually uninhabited. On each of the 7 days we spent there, we spent at least some time on a beach without a single soul on it. Our hotel had a whopping 15 rooms, only 3 or 4 of which were occupied our week.

I have also been to Belize (loved it; stayed at Ramon's Village one year, and chartered a sailboat last year), so I can understand the sort of escape you seek. The waters of the Bahamas' Out Islands are much prettier than Belize's, though Belize's barrier reef makes for unparalleled diving.

I've also been to the T&C -- twice to Provo and once to Grand Turk. Provo's main beach is amazing, but tourism is increasing to this island. Grand Turk, in comparison, has a much quieter feel, but the beaches are not as good as Provo's.

You are looking for Culebra or Vieques. Both islands are located off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Calm waters and not overun w/ tourists. Absolutely beautiful!!!

I would recommend Bonaire. Beautiful calm, clear warm water, lots of snorkeling and diving from shore. Low touristas.

It's difficult to judge what another person considers "low touristas" but since your favorite place is Ambergris Cay, I am going to assume that you aren't looking for total isolation. I haven't found any other place that provides the same experience as AC, but I think you might like Akumal, Mexico. I'm not talking about the AI resorts that say they're located in "Akumal", ignore those places, but rather the original beachside community. Here's a map of the area that shows the two bays and lagoon: http://www.mindspring.com/~gringolingo/map.htm

Akumal Bay is protected by a reef offshore with very calm water and good snorkeling (but not as good as Belize). There are a couple of hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and a small grocery store located here. Half Moon bay has condos and villas for rent along with a few more restaurants but gets more waves than Akumal Bay. I think the beaches here are better than AC which tends not to have great beaches.
