Cabarete & Las Canas, DR: Where can I get info?
 

Where can I get recent information on this area? Posts found are 8 years old.

Looking for recent visitors or residents, what the towns are like, the beach -- windsurfing only or is it nice enough for lounging, etc...

Also, safety questions. Possible long-term lodging choice for us and want to get as much information as I can.

Looking for other trusted websites that would be helpful, too.

We were in Cabarete about five years ago and loved it. Both kite and windsurfing are very popular there because of the windiness of the area. While our husbands enjoyed those sports, we found the area and sand perfect for lounging. Also, you can walk along the beach at night and pick which bar/restaurant you want to enjoy. They move some of the furniture into the sand and you are surrounded by palm trees while you sit and dine or imbibe. Town is one long street for shopping but most dining, hotels, etc are along the beach. It has definitely been discovered by Europeans. If you liked activity (rafting, biking), those would need to be done as side trips and might involve a little busing with guides. We had a great time and loved the ambiance....hope it doesn't get too discovered!

So the beaches weren't too windy? I've heard that it is blowing sand so if you're not windsurfing it can be unbearable. ( I used to windsurf for years so the wind is a plus for the sport, a big negative for lounging.)

Also, how was the safety issue with you around town walking? Ever feel uncomfortable or unwelcome? You said you "loved the ambiance" so hopefully "no" is your answer to the above

Hi. I have been to Cabarete several times over the last 3 years. I love it. I stay at a place called Velero, on the point of Cabarete Beach.
The town itself is hopping. It has a mix of every sort of restaurant. At nite, they serve on the beach w/ teaky lights, tables- just beautiful. Dancing until the wee hours. Day- great beach walks, local restaurants for inexpensive food, great kite surfing, wind surfing. Areas on the beach for meditative floating- unbelievable. but plasce to body surf.

Safety- you just need to be smart. dont' look rich and be oblvious. Don't carry a lot. WHEN people approach, smile and say not thanks. Then be insistent- no I just don't want that or like that. They won't knife you or shoot you like in the states! They will steal if you leave things available- remember they are poor- $2000/yr annual income for big families.

Velero is so safe, delightful, beautiful. Pool makes you feel like it is in the ocean but elevated so WHEN it is windy you still are protected from sand but enjoy the breeze and sun. The perimeter is guarded 24/7- they know when someone is on the property that does not belong there w/in seconds. I leave my ipod out! it is a haven to all the activity around it but so close to everything.

I think that addresses your question. Food CAN be cheap and really good- if you find the good local places. enjoy.
