cab or car rental in Anguilla

Is it easy to get cabs in Anguilla, or is it better to rent a car? A little worried about driving on the other side of the road.

There are always plenty of cabs at the ferry dock and the airport plus you'll generally find a couple of cabs waiting around the major resorts. You can always ask the hotel concierge to call you a cab if none are around. Lastly, if you take a cab somewhere (say to a restaurant or beach) you can ask the driver to pick you up at a pre-determined time and they will be glad to do that for you.

With that in mind, cabs can get expensive - two r/t's to almost anywhere on the island in a day will cost you much more than a rental car.

Driving on the left is not all that difficult. You have to be a bit careful the first day while you "train yourself" to look for traffic in the "opposit direction" but most people master the skill quickly. If you are a good driver "back home' you shouldn't have any difficulties comming to grips with driving on Anguilla.

Personally, I'd rent a car as it gives you much more freedom.

we didn't rent a car during our trip to anguilla a) b.c of the driving on the left thing and b) b/c we wanted to have some cocktails and wine when we went out to dinner. Our driver from teh airport became our driver for the 5 days, with the exception of a trip or 2. he gave us his cell and we would just let him know ahead of time when we needed him. at the end of the 5 days, it cost us about 300 including tip. It was well worth the peace of mind for us. Most people will tell you to rent a car in anguilla though.

I would rent a car. not much is in walking distance of any one place. You will spend a fortune in cabs if you intend to visit different areas..which you should because there are so many beautiful places/beaches and great restaurants. Anguilla ssems to not have much traffic so that is one less thing to worry about while adjusting to driving on the other side. Often times, you wil be the only car on the little dirt road :-)

Good point emcash. We love wine with dinner, and driving on the left after that may not be the best idea.

We always rent a car. It makes it so much easier to explore the island fully and at our own pace. Even though driving is on the left - which you get used to very quickly - the cars are all "American" in the placement of the steering wheel on the left (which is particularly significant if you have a manual-shift car). The whole island is pretty flat, and you'll rarely-if-ever encounter crazy drivers.

def rent a car. i felt much safer driving a car on the left on Anguilla than on the right on St Martin (congested towns). like most others above imply, Anguilla deserves to be explored and is very safe and easy to navigate
