Hello,

we like to trvel from puerto rico to the american or the british virgin islands. But we like to do that trip by boat and not by plane. does anybody have any suggestions how to do it? we couldnt find ferry or anything online. is it possible to travel there by ship?

Thanks for your answers and best regards,

There are no ferries between Puerto Rico and either the USVI's or BVI's.

The only practical way to get there by boat is to do a private charter. It's about 80 miles and would take about 10 hours by power boat and about 15 to 18 hours by sailboat. You'd be crossing a lot of open water and the trip could be a bit "lumpy" so you'd need a fairly large boat (say 40' to 50' in length) and in addition to the basic charter cost you'd have to also pay the deadhead cost to get the boat and crew back to it's home port. I'd venture to say it would cost you about $1,500 to $2,000 to charter a sail boat and perhaps double that to charter a power boat.

Some cruise ships either begin their itineraries in San Juan or have San Juan as a Port of Call and also stop in one or more of the USVI's or BVI's but, depending on their terms of carriage, may or may not be allowed to legally let you disembark from the ship in "mid-cruise" so you'd have to check with each cruise line for particulars. If allowed, you'd have to pay the full cost of the cruise for each person in your party even though you'd only be going between 2 Ports of Call.

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but flying between Puerto Rico and the USVI's or the BVI's makes the most sense. The flight takes about 35 minutes to the USVI's and 45 minutes to the BVI's and will run you between $60 and $150 depending on airline, day of week and which island you fly into.
