We were scheduled to sail BVI with The Moorings in October but hurricane Irma changed our plans. Will be sailing a crewed Cat 50ft powercat and 3 couples will be going in May 2018. We sailed BVI last March and loved it. This time our party is worried that BVI won't be "ready" due to hurricane damage. The Moorings recommended the Exumas. A couple people in our party get quite sea sick (even got sick in BVI and had to dock or moor in calm bays). I've read that the Exumas can get quite rough and there aren't many areas to hide away from the rough waters! I can't seem to get a straight answer from The Moorings about all this! Any help is appreciated!

Since you are going in May, I don't expect you'll have much difficulty with sea conditions; they are quite calm that time of year. The prevailing winds are generally from the east, and the best anchorages are on the west side of the cays -- so the land masses block the winds. (That is, unless a cold front comes through, but you won't see those in May.) The real difference in sea conditions in the Exumas are tides and currents, which can rip through cuts at high speed. However, since you say you are going with a crew, your crew will know not to anchor in cuts, and -- in the unlikely event that you have to traverse a cut -- they'll know to do it at slack tide.

Of course, the most iconic mooring field in the Exumas is Warderick Wells, and there the current has carved out a deep channel where the mooring balls are. The current doesn't really impact the motion of your boat, BUT don't jump in the water without a line attaching you to the boat; otherwise you can be carried away.

I love both destinations, but Exumas is one of my top favorites in the world! Tons of sandbars, quirky little cays, tame sharks, iguanas, hidden beaches, and swimming pigs!

The water in Exumas for me is the prettiest in the world (I've been everywhere) We explored it in little 13' skiffs, and survived! Water was relatively calm
