Buy liquor in airport on arrival?
 

Just a quick one: after we land in Jamaica, is there a place in the airport to buy a bottle of rum or vodka or whatever? It's just nice to have a bottle of something in the hotel room, and we don't plan on leaving resort grounds once we get there. Thanks!

Buy your booze in the duty free area of your US departure airport.

As above, duty free booze at the airport is always where you are departing from, not where you are arriving to.

Not necessarily. We always purchase liquor upon arrival in St. Thomas for consumption during our vacations on St. John...and again on our way back home to NJ.

I have only been to Jamaica once and didn't pay attention at the time, but I'd imagine you can go to the duty free store and make purchases on your way into the country.

Considering that in some airports you might have a problem bringing liquids onto the plane (on recent trip home from Bermuda we were told in the shop that we must put any liquids in checked luggage)....buying them at your departing airport might not be the best idea, but at the store they should be able to tell you their specific rules.

We just returned from Jamaica last week. I do not remember seeing any duty free stores at the airport upon arrival. There was a couple of places, including Margaritaville, to purchase individual drinks.

We purchased duty free in Houston on our way to Jamaica. Once you clear the security area, where the duty free stores are located, you do not have to place duty free items in your checked luggage. They allow you to bring on the plane. We did have to fill out a custom form on the plane indicating what duty free items we were bringing into Jamaica. I don't remember having to do that before to any other destination.

On our way home, we placed the Rum we purchased on the Island in our checked baggage. The additional items we purchased at the duty free stores in the Jamaica airport, we were allowed to carry on the plane. Once we reached Houtson and re-claimed our bags, those duty free itmes had to be placed in our check luggage before rechecking them to our final destination. We were told by airline staff that if we did not place the Jamaica purchased duty free items in the checked baggage it would be an $80 fee for them to retrieve one of our bags to do so or we could opt to throw it away. If you don't have a connecting flight, it won't be an issue.

duty free shops in irports are upon departure not unpon arrival.
what you bought in St. thomas is duty free beacause the whole island is duty free.
you can buy duty free booze anywhere anytime in St. Thomas but an island that has import duties is different.

when leaving mexico a month ago i wanted to buy a bottle of perfume. i did so in the duty free there. they packaged it in a plastic bag with tie and gave it to a man. when i boarded it was at the gate for me to pick up. as with kvr, i put it in my checked luggage when we changed planes in atlanta.

Just to clarify, we were only wondering whether there was a place to buy a bottle of liquor at the airport after we arrive in Jamaica so that we could take it to our hotel room (without having to stop en route to the hotel or leave the hotel once we arrive).

Duty free does not matter, and we don't plan on bringing it onto a plane, as we will be just arriving in Jamaica, not leaving.

Seems like the best suggestion so far is to buy duty free in NY before boarding, so thank you CaymanSue and Kvr!
