Bring Wedding/Engagement rings?
 

My new wife and I are heading to Curacao and Aruba sson for our honeymoon and we wondering is she should bring her wedding and engagement rings, or leave them at home. We are staying at Marriotts on both islands. Do they have in-room safes? Or just one for the Hotel? Thanks for the help.

I always wear my jewelry in the Caribbean and have never felt unsafe.

The exception to that was a recent trip to Jamaica as we had planned to do a lot of traveling all over the country - including to Kingston - and I did not want to worry about it, so I left everything at home except one ring with some small diamonds.

I have been diving, snorkeled, and been out late at clubs and never had even the slightest concern or felt like anyone was "eyeing" it.

One place I would NEVER leave it is the hotel or room safe, but that's just me.

If it fits well, so it will not come off on the beach or in the water, it will be fine.

If it stresses you too much, leave it at home.

Everyone develops their own personal preference for wearing rings over time - everything from never taking them off to never wearing either. Hers will evolve in time - but actual statistical risk is probably no different than being in a large US city, leaving them in a public bathroom, losing them down a drain, etc. You can always turn the stone inward on the engagement ring if you are feeling uncomfortable at a particular time. If either of you is going to worry about them a great deal, leave them home - either way, make sure they are separately scheduled/insured on your policy and have a good time.

Just keep in mind that the fingers shrink in salt water. Many a newlywed have lost their rings on their honeymoon. If you plan on being in the water for an extended period of time, I'd keep the rings in the safe or if you are concerned with hotel safe security, leave them home.

If they are insured you might wear them, but if not, leave them at home with someone you trust or in a safe deposit box. Loosing them in the water while snorkling would not be worth bringing them either. Typically I wear my band but leave my diamond at home.

Call the Marriot 800# and ask if there are room safes. I always bring my diamond ring, but never wear it to the beach during the day.

I always wear both my engagement ring and wedding band and I've never felt unsafe.

My husband and I stayed at the Marriott in Curacao last November and I know they do have an in room safe. I've never stayed at the Marriott in Aruba (we usually stay elsewhere on that island), but I would think they probably have an in room safe there also.

I've never felt "unsafe" while wearing rings in the Caribbean, but keep in mind that you may damage/lose jewelry during activities such as snorkelling or diving; a friend lost the stone in her ring when she wiped out during jetskiing.

I'm not sure that it's as easy to lose rings as I hear people talking about. Many women,including myself, have always worn them on vacation and never worried. I have a big diamond and never felt unsafe wearing it anywhere. The Curacao Marriott has a very big safe in the bathroom, so I would think that Aruba would as well.

You've seen how fishing lures sparkle and shine, right? Well, beware jewelry when diving or snorkeling for the same reason.

We were snorkeling in Cayman, shallow water, just moving along the surface, arms trailing behind us as they do when you are using fins, when I felt a sharp bite on my left little finger. I never saw the fish that did it but he left a cute little oval bite mark on my pinkie. He was attracted by my engagement ring, next finger over, I'm sure. :) It's one thing for a little fish to be attracted to it, but I wouldn't want to tempt the bigger boys!!

Barracuda are very attracted to jewelry and bright colors - the shiny objects reflect light in much the same way as fish scales.

When diving, I wear my little pink and black gloves that match the rest of my diving ensemble. :) (If the area permits gloves...)

When I'm snorkeling, I turn my rings inside and clasp my hands under me as I float along. NO reason to tempt fishy fate.
