Bonine Vs. Dramaine
Which is better for sea sickness? We plan on taking alot of day sail trips on our vacation. We are not sure if we get sea sick but want to make sure we take stuff with us just incase. Is one better than the other? We've seen them both at local drug stores. Also too, the sea bands that you wear around your wrists. Do they work? Are they as good as taking the medicine? |
I am not sure if this is accurate, but I have heard that Bonine is less likely to make you drowsy then Dramamine. I also heard that the wrist bands work, but I have not tried them myself. I have been researching this too, because I have trouble with motion sickness. I will say that Dramamine knocked out my son when I gave it to him for a bus trip.

Wrist bands do not work for me. I've always used bonine and it's terrific. I believe that dramamine now has a non-drowsy variety. I assume that it'd be as good as bonine.

Lmaev-there is a recent post regarding sea sickness that might help you. FYI-I get VERY motion sick and discovered Less Drowsy Dramamine last year when staying on our friends's yacht. It worked amazingly for me! I started taking it the morning before we boarded and just continued taking it throughout the trip, not waiting to feel sick first. Did cut down on my drinking with it. Good luck.

Thanks so much for all the replies!!! I think I am going to go with the bonine or if I can find it the non-drowsy Dramamine. |
I'm not sure if this is the post that Tamryn was referring to, but there is a post from August named "seasick remedy" that has a lot of information on this.
Tamryn, Regarding your comment about drinking while taking non-drowsy Dramamine, is it OK to have one or two drinks while taking it? I'm assuming the alcohol combined with the medication either makes people more tired and/or increases sensitivity to alcohol's effects. |
BD3- I just found the first night at dinner that half of a second glass of wine had a magnified impact on me, things became a bit blurry (I admit to being a light weight!) and I left dinner to go to bed. From then on I just moderated my drinking, but I think my system became more used to the Dramamine. I am not a medical expert and it could have been the effects of the travel day (friend's private jet to private yacht-tough day's work)!
|
Thanks, Tamryn. Medications like that seem to have different effects on everyone, so I guess the best thing to do is to try the medicine at home to see how it affects me.
|
FYI, Bonine and non-drowsy Dramamine have the same active ingredient, so there is essentially no difference between them. I'd buy whichever is cheaper.
|
Bonine, Dramamine Less Drowsy are both antivert (meclizine). Take a half dose at home to see if it knocks you out. It is likely that this amount will be enough if you are not prone to motion sickness.
|
I believe that both Bonine and Dramamine only require one pill each 24 hours. If you think it will make you drowsy, just take it right before you go to bed. No problem that way.
