Best way to get to Tortola

We're going to Tortola for a sailing trip in March and would love assistance on the best way to get there. We are from Canada and would like to cut down on the no. of flights, at this point it looks like we need to take 4 separate flights. Can you fly directly from Tortola to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami?

No, you cannot get to Tortola (you actually fly into Beef Island - airport code EIS) directly from Fort Lauderdale or Miami. The airport on Tortola is too small to handle large aircraft.

I'm not an expert on travel from Canada but try routing yourself to San Juan (airport code SJU), from there it's only a short (30 minutes or so) flight to Tortola.

Ahh, I just replied to your post on the US board. RoamsAround is exactly right. One of the wonderful things about the BVI is that you can't reach them by air from the US mainland, or any other for that matter.

Whatever you decide, I definitely recommend arriving a day or even two days ahead of your cruise departure for a couple of reasons--to unwind and get on island time and to avoid any travel delays/cancellations that might arise in Canada in March. Giving yourself two extra days of cushion should ensure a vacation unmarred by weather delays.

Try flying to St. Thomas (STT) instead of Beef Island. You'll have more flight options. As long as your flight arrives by 3:30-ish, you can take a ferry from St. Thomas to Tortola. They run fairly regularly (every 30 minutes or so from Charlotte Amalie) and the trip is about 45 minutes. It's a nice way to ease into Island Time.
