Best St. John Book?
First thank you to all who contibuite to this board. The information here is very helpful. I have decided to go to St. John for my honeymoon and am in the stages of planning the trip. I know there are 3 commonly mentioned books on St. John and was wondering which one is considered to be the most informative. The three I know of are:
1) St. John Off the Beaten Path 2) St. John's Beaches 3) St. John Feet/Fins/and 4wd. The titles might not be exact, but should suffice. Do I need all of them or will one do, and for those that have been to St. John, which have you found most helpful? Thanks HM2005 |
I used the fins and 4wd one. It gave me everything I was looking for. It's a small island. Hard to believe that there is much more info in the other books.

FF4WD is more current in the latest edition and has more information on the East End of St. John. Off the Beaten Path has better maps and more historical information. Carib Mart offers great delivery on any of these books.

I second the recommendation for FF4wd. I bought all three before going, only took FF4WD with me. It had all the information we needed, including specific info on road conditions (important when deciding whether or not to tackle a route), and lots of good information on each beach (which ones are calmer than others, where to snorkel on each one, etc. etc.).

Another vote for Feet, Fins & FWD...told us all we needed to know!

My husband and I are returning to stj for our 4th time this summer and have never really used a guide. The island is small enough and the people are friendly enough that you'll get around just fine! I would think the books would tell you about activities, restaurants, and beaches which is good to know about in advance, but St.John is so care free, I wouldn't worry about being too prepared before you go! Also, this website has alot of the info you'll need. We always like to check the ferry schedule before we go, but other than that, it is a very easy island to get around!
Have fun!!!! |
In my opinion the best is "St. John Beach Guide" It includes beautiful color pictures of every beach, directions to each and the most ideal point to enter the water for optimal snorkeling. It addition there is an arial view of the entire island, where each beach is pin pointed. It will begreat way to plan your beach exploration.

Another vote for F/F/4WD. Just returned yesterday, the book was extremely helpful. Congrats and have a great time.
