Best Snorkeling in Caribbean region?
Hi, I would like to find a place that has
some nice snorkeling, i.e., safe, clear,
and interesting sea life or corrals but not man eating sharks
I am thinking of leaving mid February
for a week to 10 days. As a consequence
I would likely want to have a few additional activities in addition to snorkeling. Cycling (would need to rent), hiking (see sites), a place to do some
Latin dancing (rumba, cha cha, or whatever
the locals are doing---note I am *NOT* into pointless binging and staying up all night!
A good place to stay that provides all meals and is quiet is also a must.

There are quite a few good snorkeling destinations in the Caribbean. We enjoyed Grand Cayman. There was good snorkeling and swimming with stingrays. It's a quiet island too. St. John is also a nice snorkeling destinatipn and quiet as well. Have fun!

Bonaire is reputed to have the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. Other destinations with excellent snorkeling sites include Grand Cayman, St. John, most of the British Virgin Islands, the Tobago Cays (in the Grenadines) and Belize.

with your 10 days i suggest a 2 island split. on puerto rico you could stay around san juan for a few days to see the old part of the city and do some dancing. then head over to el yunque national rain forest for the hiking and biking. http://www.elyunque.com/about.html
then over to vieques for the snorkeling. if you are there when there is little or no moon you should do the bio-bay excursion. (dyno-flagellents sp? - tiny organisms in the water that light up).
or as an alternative you might look at one of the numerous all-inclusive resorts in the playa del carman area just south of cancun.
great snorkeling, ruins, cenotes, atv jungle tours, golf, zip-line, etc. loads to do. some dancing in town at night. pdc is very happening but as soon as your out of town a/or at the ai's it is very quiet.

My favorite snorkelling spots in the Caribbean are in the BVI:
- The Norman Island Caves
- The Wreck of the RMS Rhone
- The Baths - Virgin Gorda
- Great Dog - next to Jost Van Dyke
- Alice’s Backside
Hope this helps.

worldwideboat has hit just about the only remaining quality spots left. But the waters just off Caneel Bay Resort rival any of those mentioned. Cooper Island still has a few quality spots left as well.
Quality snorkeling is now left to Belize and Honduras' Bay Islands.

Worldwide hit many good spots, several of which you can make day trips to from St John. St John has great, easily accessible, snorkeling beaches. I did see a shark the last day last year...pretty sure it was a Nurse Shark but decided to head back to the beach anyway.

Here is some info on snorkeling at Harbour Heights in the Grand Cayman Islands: http://www.harbourheightscayman.com/...g/default.html
It is a very great place to snorkel along with some other great activities.
Hope you find the right place for you to stay!
