Best Place to Watch Sunset?

Hi Folks,
Anyone have any tips on where the best place in the Caribbean is to watch the sunset? I'm a photographer and looking for a good range of places in the Caribbean to shoot from. Thank you!

Hi invinciblelight,
Our main quest when we travel the caribbean is booking places where we can sit back and enjoy a glass of wine with some Buffett tunes while watching the sunset, so hopefully I can help you! We always try to book places where we can see the sunset-I find the best ones are where they set directly over the water without land in the way to get the best reflections, or if there is something unique in the picture to compliment the sunset. Of course, every sunset is different and it really comes down to the luck of the draw while there as to how spectacular it is.

With that being said, the best sunsets we've seen during our Caribbean travels were in St. Lucia from the Stonefield Villas. My pictures are here. I especially liked photographing it from there with the reflection in our private pool :)

We also had some nice sunsets from Mahoe Bay, Virgin Gorda, but we didn't get the vibrant colors like we did in St. Lucia-it was more hazy there.

Another great sunset watching place is from the Princeville in Kauai (but that's not caribbean-here's a picture I took from our private dinner on the beach :)

The 2 best sunsets I have ever witnessed were from Negril, Jamaica, and San Salvador, Bahamas. Simply beautiful

The best sunsets we have seen were late November through early May. While we have seen great sunsets during the summer, these were more unusual because of the weather. Prevailing winds from Africa deposit more particles in the air, combined with weather(rain) patterns, all create more haze in the air during the summer months. I'd characterize the sunsets during the summer to be somewhat paler, with pastels and more blues and pinks, with sunsets during the drier months to be more blazingly spectacular, with the full palette of rich tones. There are exceptions, of course, for both times of year.

That being said, I love sunsets, whether they're ablaze with color or more subdued and silvery. And watching them from your private pool as kellybeaches mentions is a decadent treat indeed!

Thanks so much, everyone--these are great (i love seeing the pictures!). I'd love to know if there are any specifc places in Negril and San Salvador you'd recommend, Sam17. Was there a particular beach/cliff/bar/hotel you liked to watch the sunset from? Thank you!

sam17 Aug 30th, 2008 08:35 AM

In Negril it was from the beach at Swept Away Resort. In San Sal it was from the beach bar at Club Med. If you would like to see some pics let me know and I will email you

That's great, thank you! No need to email--I'll look it up. Best,

Ps-don't rule out sunrise pictures as well. They can be just as wonderful. Check out our sunrise pictures we took in St. John this past September from our villa overlooking Hart Bay. (I also included a couple sunset shots with my husband feeding the gulls and some other cool shots I took). One important note when shooting the horizon-make sure you keep the horizon horizontal when taking the picture. Good luck!

Yes, sunrises can be just as outstanding. I'm much less likely to be either (a) awake or (b) with a rum punch in my hand for the sunrises, though! :)

I've seen fabulous sunsets from Grand Anse Beach on Grenada, Dickenson Bay on Antigua, Pinney's Beach on Nevis, from the Sunset Terrace and from my room on Guana Island, from my villa on Maho Bay on Virgin Gorda, from Cobblers Cove on Barbados, from S. Frigate Bay on St. Kitts, from Mar Blue in Treasure Beach in Jamaica.

I had the privilege of seeing the Green Flash in Grenada and St. Kitts. St. Kitts and Jamaica possibly tie for best sunsets I've seen in the Caribbean, and both islands I visited during the winter months.

These are great tips--thank you everyone!!

In addition to the above recommendations I would like to add watching sunset from the Skyworld restaurant at the top of Tortola.

MyBar at Sunset House in Grand Cayman is a great option.

This coming Wednesday I'll be there, we have a very active multi-sports community and at 5:30pm on Wednesday we have the last in the annual summer "Stroke and Stride" series, where about 150 people will swim an 800m (half mile) loop in the ocean, then climb up the dive ladders (Sunset House is a dive resort), pull on sneakers, then run 2 miles, ending up back at MyBar.

For us spectators, we can watch the whole thing from the comfort of the bar, then watch the sun set around 7pm.

Highly civilised !

I'll throw out an obsure place called Rainbow Beach Club on St. Croix. I think it is called Rythym's at Rainbow Beach now.

From a rental unit, Sugar Apple (purplepineapple.com), on a bluff on the west side of Tortola, facing Jost Van Dyke.....outrageously nice

Love watching the sunset at Shipwreck's Beach Bar on South Friars Beach on beautiful St. Kitts.

The Caves resort was amazing for a sunset in Negril on the cliffs!

Our favorite and most memorable was on Christmas Eve at Cabo Rojo in Puerto Rico.

Google "Cabo Rojo Sunset" and you'll see what we mean!

Standing at the top of the unguarded cliffs, in front of one of the most quaint lighthouses we've ever scene, we wondered while the sun went down in front of us and the moon rose behind us. The entire sky seemed ablaze and the the cliffs turned firey red before our eyes.

We truly felt as though we were standing on the edge of the earth!
