best jamaica snorkeling

Where do you find the best snorkeling in Jamaica? Has anyone taken a boat out with a guide somewhere further off-shore? If so, was it enjoyable & would you recommend?

way back when - we went in Negril ... i think it was around 2002 and it was $15/per person with a little boat .... just the two of us, about 20 minute ride of shore

i don't know how pristine it would be at this point though

Very little snorkeling in Jamaica. When we visited abt a dozen years ago, we loved the island, but never returned because snorkeling is a high priority for us. It was virtually non-existent (compared to many other Caribbean islands).

In Negril you can snorkel off the cliffs, but if you are on the beach you have to take a boat out. Other areas in Jamaica have good off-beach snorkeling, we've enjoyed it near Port Maria on the east coast.

We stayed on Runaway Bay at the Franklyn D. Resort a few summers ago, and I found the snorkeling pretty good. Best to take a small boat out just a 5-15 minute ride from shore, but you can also just swim from the beach in front of Breezes.
