We always stayed at the Radisson which is now a Marriott and it was nice. The Westin is nice, but larger and you are fighting more people for beach space. The Hyatt is nice, but across the street from the beach. Treasure Island has a bad beach and the water in front of it is rocky as well. Those are the "Big 4".
Shopping downtown is good and there are several strip malls. Try not to go downtown when a ship is in, it's like a zoo then.
Snorkeling in front of the Marriott may be good. We snorkeled there one year and it was excellent and the next time it was all churned up. Cemetery Reef is the best off shore, Smiths is nice too but the sand was really rocky the last time we were there. If you have booties you will have no trouble. Eden Rock and Parrots landing is in town and is ok and behind the Burger KIng is a good place if you can get there on a day when there are no ships in. The Bahama Mamma will take you there. Stingray City if a fun trip and they also stop at other places to snorkel and dive for conch.

When we went to Grand Cayman, we stayed at the Westin. It was great - and we never felt that crowded on the beach. The hotel is beautiful, the restaurant where breakfast is served is great - and the food was great, too. We had an ocean view room - absolutely wonderful! Also, across the street is a small strip mall - and in there is Captain Marvin's. We took their snorkeling trip - the Stingray City trip really was great! Shopping was not a big part of the Cayman experience. There are great restaurants, though! Enjoy!

We stayed at Treasure Island and the beach is rocky because there is a great reef out front. We spent hours snorkeling there, saw eel , stingray, hawksbill turtle and loads of fish. The sandy beach in front of the Marriott is a short 5 minute walk. Shopping is best at the strip malls and downtown if you want tourist stuff. Captain Rackam's rum cake is the best. Barefoot man plays at Rum Point and Captain Marvin's all day snorkel trip and visit to Stingray City is the best. Get coupons at airport. Dining is good at Papagallos, Landmark, Almond tree (coconut shrimp), Rum Point, Wharf... these are pricey though. Have fun.

Without any question, the best hotel on the beach is the Westin. You'll love the hotel, the beach, the restaurants, and the service. The best snorkeling spots from shore are: 1) near downtown, near Paradise divers (the entry point is actually at Paradise divers) at Devils grotto, and 2) cemetary reef. The site at Paradise divers is much better than cemetary reef. Just make sure you go when a cruise ship isn't in. There is alot more fish life and turtles than at cemetary reef. There is also a fair snorkel spot just south from the Westin out about 150 to 200 yards from shore. Walk south from the Westin, down about two or three condo's next door, then swim straight out.
