Best Flat Island with Long Beaches
I don't do well traveling round and round, ie., St. Thomas, St. John, so I'm looking for something more flat. I also want long stretches of beach so I can take long walks. Provo was perfect but I'm looking for somewhere different. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try looking at Long Island or Cat Island in the Bahamas. Both of these are relatively flat, are about 50 to 60 miles in length and have beaches that stretch for miles and miles with virtually no one on them. Be warned, however, that theses are relatively sparsly populated islands and there is not a lot to do other than swimming and walking along the beaches. Anegada in the BVI's is similar in topography and length of beaches. It too is spasely populated. For "flat" islands with more activity check out Anguilla and Aruba.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Tulum, Mexico Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres, Mexico Anguilla |
Greenwood Beach Resort on the southeast corner of Cat Island has one of the longest beaches that you’ll find anywhere. There’s an interesting display of beach items at their bar that have washed up on the beach including a message in a bottle that floated for something like ten years.
As Sunnyboy says, there not much to do, so take a book. |
Cancun, Mexico
Grand Cayman Aruba |
Anguilla, hands down. Has many long magnificent beaches. If you can get there and afford it.

Anguilla by far!!! 33 beaches. Several are more than a mile in length. Sand like talcum powder and very white.

The Dominican Republic has several miles-long beaches, though they are pretty heavily developed. Punta Cana has some good stretches. You might consider the area around Punta Cana Resort & Club; the only other hotel nearby is Club Med. On the longer, Bavaro stretch, Iberostar has a nice, long stretch of its own, and you can continue on for miles in either direction if you don't mind walking through the other resorts' stretches.

Thank you for your suggestions. I spent a weekend in Anguilla and fell IN LOVE with the Island. Maybe I'll just have to go back.

Caribbean Travel and Life readers voted Cayman top beaches, snorkelling, diving and all around island in their annual awards recently.
I am biased, but Cayman would be a great choice for you :) |
Grand Cayman ... Seven Mile Beach ... baby powder soft with pristine waters.

My vote would go to Cayo Largo, Cuba.
Resort of choice would be the Melia Sol Club Cayo Largo which is located on Playa Lindamar. There are many direct international flights into Cayo Largo. You could easily walk 20+ kilometres along the beach and the sand is sugar white and soft with the most amazing aqua-marine clear water. I've never had anything less than an idylic time on Cayo Largo, though it is a quiet island most suited to those who seek a peacefull vacation, strong on rest, relaxation and tranquility. Here's a website you can check out for more info, photos, etc. http://www.cayolargodelsur.cu/ Steve |
