Skip St. Croix, it's off the beaten path from St. Thomas, and beaches are not as nice as the British Virgin Islands, which is easier to get to. I would Do St. Croix as a seperate vacation-concentrate on BVI's.

The best beaches in my opinion are White Grape Bay on Jost Van Dyke, any beach on Virgin Gorda (Savannah Bay is stunning, have the taxi take you there before the Baths) and Deadman's Bay on Peter Island is quite stunning. Any beach on St. John is outstanding too.

On St. Thomas, I think the prettiest beach is Sapphire Beach, followed by Coki Beach, and of course, then Meagan's Bay.

My opinion, (and I LOVE Tortola, so don't get me wrong here) but Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda have far superior beaches. Having never been to Tortola though, if you insist, check out Cane Garden Bay.

Here is a very good guide to the beaches on St. John:

The beaches on St. Croix and Tortola are not the "best" of the Virgin Islands. St. John has so many beaches and so little time to do them all! I happen to like Honeymoon (on the Caneel property) but there are many along the north shore of the island. Cinnamon and Trunk do have services and Trunk has the underwater snorkeling trail. It does have good snorkeling from many of the beaches without the crowds at Trunk.
Thinking probably Brewer's Bay on Tortola is the best and Smuggler's is a little cove and beach. Joshia's is also nice. Cane Garden Bay has bars/restaurants/etc along it and is a popular spot for the cruisers to hang out (as is Smuggler's I hear).
Definitely think that beaches on the other BVIslands are nicer - much nicer than Tortola's - Whether it be White Bay on Jost, Anegada beaches Cow Wreck or Flash of Beauty just to name two. and definitely the beaches on Virgin Gorda: Devil's Bay, Spring Bay and the Crawl, Savannah is lovely as is Mahoe - and a whole bunch of others!

On St. John, we found Hawknest Bay & Trunk Bay to be the best. Hawknest, you can just stand near some corals/rocks & fish will come & swim right under your feet. Trunk bay was great for its wide long beautiful white soft sand & the water was very clear. Go when there's not a lot of people around to enjoy the beach more. There is an entrance fee, $4/person I think, to get into Trunk bay, but we got there after all the cruise travelers left & after 4:30. You won't be able to use the shower facilities after 4:30 hence not fee, but that was not why we were there for.

another vote for honeymoon beach at caneel. we went back twice. hawknest ok, we also went to francis beach (cinnamon was too rough there was barely any beach) we also enjoyed salt pond beach but no shade there - being used to east coast beaches no shade is nothing new...just loved st. john but am trying anguilla this year
