Bermuda Weekend Feb 2014
Hubby and I are just back from an incredible weekend in Bermuda. We were a bit concerned about traveling in the off-season, but it was an excellent decision. No crowds to speak of, nearly perfect weather (~70 degrees, only one quick rainstorm, warm enough to splash in the ocean during the day), and a great deal on our hotel. Although we had just two full days on the island, we got to see everything at the top of our list -- St. George, the caves, Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, and Horseshoe Bay beach, plus tried a bunch of great restaurants in Hamilton. Wonderful trip report on my favorite island! Just the dose of Bermuda to cure this grey winter mood. Thank you for posting. |
Used to love Bermuda, but the recent 50% increase in taxi fares (which were already horrendously expensive on an island where you can't rent a car and where ferries and buses seem to flash strike on a regular basis!) combined with the new reports that the most beautiful beaches, when the wind is blowing 'the wrong way' are polluted with 'grease wrapped turds' as a result of untreated human waste being pumped directly into the sea from both Hamilton and King Edward Hospital have put end to my visits there. Disgusting, both on a yucch level and for harming our planet without conscience. Many lovely alternatives where the costs are more reasonable -- especially for meals and hotels -- and where money spent is really helping the local economy and therefore valued.

Everyone's experiences are different. In my experience I have never seen waste on the beaches as you describe nor have I ever been inconvenienced by a transportation strike. The last thing Bermuda's small, narrow roads need is visitors in rental cars. I hope that policy doesn't change. The taxi fares are high, no difference of opinion there. But I rely on public transportation and get around just fine. For me Bermuda is still a beautiful, quiet place to go.
