Bermuda
Two questions regarding Bermuda:
1. I am looking for a luxury hotel in Bermuda on a calm beach. I have a 6-year old and don't want a beach with strong waves. Any hotels with bathwater beaches? 2. I checked the weather for Bermuda in May and I can't figure out if it is too cold to swim on the beach. Do people typically swim in May in Bermuda or am I better off waiting until June? |
Cambridge Beaches Resort has what you are seeking - two very calm beaches with shallow waters.
Average temperature in May is in the mid-to high 70's F. Average in June is high 70's to low 80's F. Whether those temperature are warm enough for swimming is something you'll have to decide for yourself. |
Look into Pompano Beach. It is located on the island's largest sand bar and the water is like a giant swimming pool. We stayed there last year and loved it. May should be fine for swimming. Luxury, but less expensive than Cambridge Beaches. Food is wonderful. I think your son would love it.

Agree with the above comments. Pompano beach is very shallow for many feet out. But the beach is on the narrow side so quite a few chairs lined up closely. We were overall very happy with Pompano. My impression is that Cambridge is slightly more high end (we had dinner there). I would look at pictures on trip advisor posted by other travelers to get a good comparison.

Dr Andrea,
The "Bermuda Day" holiday falls on May 24 and many of the locals consider this day the opening of "beach season". I live in New England where the water is very chilly and I swim in Bermuda in May. |
Thanks for your responses! Unfortunately, Cambridge has a no children under 13 policy. Any other suggestions? Which hotel is considered the best on the island?

Andrea,
Many people would consider Rosewood Tucker's Point to be very exclusive. Best is difficult to define as we are all looking for different things in a property. It looks like Tucker's Point allows children as they have a children's program called "Rose Buds": http://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/tuc...s-for-children However, it does not appear to run in May - looks like it starts in June. I think that Tucker's Point is a bit too isolated for my tastes. With your interests in a hotel on a beach in a calm area I would look at Pompano. |
Pompano Beach is ideal for what you are looking for. West Whale Bay Beach is also very calm but there are no hotels nearby. It is a truly stunning small beach.
Personally, I find even early - mid June a bit cold for swimming although I do swim in it. A few degrees warmer and it would be perfect. The last time we went was in June, the air temps were low 70s. |
