Beaches report

Beaches is a great resort.
We booked at $1,149.00 per week per person.
If I were willing to pay $1,600 to $2,000 per week I would definately spend my money elsewhere.
So....here we go.
The grounds are impecable. There was always someone cleaning.
The pools were always clean, with the exception of an occasional cup or straw a child may have left behind.
The hot and cold splunge pools were not being maintained as they had a layer of debris in them all the time. This really didnt matter as they were so small you really wouldnt go in them. They look long in the pictures but in reality they are about 5' X 6'.
The spa srvices were great. I compared the prices to the states and they are probably about $5.00 more per service.
The food was excellent. I am not interested in local flavor, as some have indicated they are there for the local food. After seeing most of the restauants I passed I'm not sure how clean they were anyway. But I must say that at almost every meal we had they offered a dish of local flavor. We had eggs benedict (good hollandaise, but I've had better) and steak for breakfast.
For dinner we had everything from filet minon, grilled lobster, lamb and veal francais. All of these were very good. Deserts were also good. cheesecakes, creme brulee and tiramasu just to mention a few.
The rooms were beautiful and very well maintained.
The service was definately five star. We were always greeted with a smile and a hello. I must say we travel quite frequently (like every other month) and always greet our waiters, buspersons or any other servers with cheerful smiles and hello....this usually gets us the same response.
The beach and water was wonderful as most say. We did go snorkling right at the beach. They offer catamaran's for the guest to take out..which we did. Snorkle equip. is free for an hour or two.
The entertainment is lame. They have Karaoke from 11pm til about 1. There is some soft music playing in turtles bar from 8 on. Most of the entertainment is geared to children.

Which brings me to why I'm glad I didn't pay more.
Kids are kids.
We were there in December which was slow.
All of what I said may not apply in the summer when the place is overrun with families.
The real problem wasn't the kids-it's the parents.
Kids learn to misbehave. We were playing billiards at one table and at the other were two parents and a 5 or 6 year old. The child got up on the pool table (shoes and all). The parents just stood there talking as if thats where she was suppose to be! I think tis is more of that insane thinking...I paid to be here. There was a child at breakfast (maybe 18 months old) who picked up the porcelain sugar packet holder and proceeded to bang it on the table. This continued loudly and the parents thought nothing of the fact that other people were sitting right there. The child then dumped all the sugar packets onto the floor. Again, the parents didn't even have the decency to pick them up, they just sat there like it wasn't their problem.
I cold go on and on about the kids/parents.
However, I will say if this was a adults only or a family resort with responsible parents I would definately go back.
If you have children and want a vacation that yu can let them run wild this is the place.
I think it's too bad this place is so nice and wasted on so many ignorant parents.
Sorry this was so long but I wanted to be sure I also got in all the good stuff.
Anything I left out .... just ask.
Which Beaches are you talking about?

Turks and Caicos

Im glad they lowered thier prices. We paid $4000 for 6 nights in an "oceanfront" suite and that was on a travel agents rate and did not feel like we received the value for the cost. Granted they were brand new when we visited but even then we felt things were not up to snuff. We brought our two children who were 9 and 10 at the time. The childrens programs were pretty lame and the one night when we asked them to go to the kids club so my husband and I could dine in the adults only restaurant, they ended up babysitting little toddlers during the movie and were told that the juice was for the "little ones". They begged not to go back. By the way that same night the adults only restarant was closed since they were hosting a private dinner for return guest of Sandals. Since we were return guests having stayed at Sandals in MoBay we asked why we werent invited and were met with "you needed to fill this out upon checkin". We said we had and received a blank stare....oh well. To top that off my husband got deathly ill on the second to last night and by the line at the nurses station the next morning alot of others had also. Some kind of food poisoning although none of the rest of us got it. He felt it might have been the water in the fitness room. I also had trouble getting the room amenities replenished i.e. shampoos etc. When I called housekeeping they told me to call the front desk, when I called them they told me to call housekeeping and on and on. We had to laugh and I just wrote it off to the resort being new. Dont get me wrong the entire trip was worth it since Provo is one of the most beautiful and pristine (not for long) places we had ever been. I just wish we would have stayed at the Grace Bay Club or Ocean Club. Cheers!

My experience at Beaches was much like Canuba (the previous poster's). Definately not worth the money. I found the food to be fancy labels (filet mignon, lobster, crab legs) but of mediocre quality. Yes, the resort was clean but the rooms were simply standard. We also got the run around when we asked for simple things like soap or one towel per person in our room. We we willing to pay top dollar ($7300+ for one room, family of four) but expected better in the way of food and amenities. Larry is correct about the plunge pools. They were filthy- a layer of green scum on them the entire week we were there! I do believe the birds use it for a bird bath- it certainly is not fit for humans. As far as parents who don't watch their kids. I totally agree. This is one of the many reasons I will never set foot in a Beaches resort again. Call me a snob but I'd much rather vacation among a better class of people. Inconsiderate and rude folks are not what I pay hard earned money to be around when I'm away.

You are not a snob, Antoinette, but simply a person with GOOD TASTE! When the new Ritz-Carlton opens on Grand Cayman I'm sure that will be just the spot for you!! (Ditto for the new Four Seasons on Great Exuma in the Bahamas!)!

thanks for the comments re:parents & kids-i too hate it when the parents let them run wild -
we have 2 kids (4&7) and like to travel w/ them while trying to educate them on good manners in public ( & private! spaces - we are always looking out for good resorts w/ good service, food and attitude - but ones that we won't unreasonably disturb the other guests -
would you consider this a good place for us? or will it just drive us crazy too?
larry Jan 7th, 2002 12:13 PM

I think you would have a great time with two kids that age.

Canuba Jan 7th, 2002 04:02 PM

I think the name of the game is "value" for your money. Beaches is not cheap. When you consider what you pay to fly to Provo I think you would be better off at one of the other upscale properties on the island. Granted, they are not all inclusive and with children that is a very attractive option. Also, nothing against you Northeasterners' but there were planeloads of people from New York and Boston and Philly filling this resort when we were there. I think Air Jamaica does alot of business out of these cities. Cheers!

I cant imagine better value for $1149.00 for a week at beaches

canuba Jan 9th, 2002 01:28 PM

Larry, 1149.00 per person.... thats x2 in most cases not including children. ..is quite a better deal than I got. Granted we were in a 1 bdrm "oceanfront suite". And as I was saying in an earlier post that I was glad they've lowered their price to more reflect the value they serve up.

Thanks for the trip report, my hubby and I are planning a trip in May. We would like an all inclusvie, because of the price of food (heard it's very expensive). The only other all inclusvie is Allergo, did you happen to see or visit it...is it that bad?

I would hate to book Beaches and it be overrun by kid (bad kids). I have no problems with parents, bringing their children, as long as they are behaved, don't get me wrong, I know kids will be kids, but some forget who the parents are and who the kids are.

Thanks for the report
