Beaches in / near San Juan

Hi,

We are traveling to Puerto Rico for 4 days in the week between Christmas and New Years - it will be our first trip to Puerto Rico. We are looking forward to Old San Juan, El Yunque, etc, and we are also looking forward to spending some time at the beach. I have heard mixed views about the beaches in SJ (isla verde and condando areas) – so while we will spend time on these beaches, we will likely thus likely go outside a little for the beach, but we have limited time so we can't go too far. A few questions: how are the beaches on dorado? Being from NYC, we don't drive much, so if we don’t rent a car, can we take cab/shuttle? Also, how is the beach at Luiquillo? And how do the beaches compare to the ones in SJ. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Good choices hre many nice ones depending on what you like

Usually just rent a car and bop around.

Johnny Depps Pirates movie was filmed at Varadero

and Run Daires features many also some are browner.

Go have a look do not forget Ponce also beautiful if time.

Happy Planning!

<<Johnny Depps Pirates movie was filmed at Varadero>>

Isn't that in Cuba?

mscott - the beaches in the San Juan area are perfectly fine but not of the stunning white sand crystal blue water variety. I'd place Isla Verde over Condado area. If you are staying in San Juan and want to visit other beaches, I think your best bet will be a rental car - although with only 4 days and Old San Juan and El Yunque already on your list, you may want to stick to the beach close to or at your hotel.

The beach at Luquillo is beautiful. Big white sand beach and very calm water.

Thanks, these are all very helpful. Given our limited time, I think we'll mostly go with the beaches in SJ, but then go to Luiquillo after our visit to El Yunque. Thanks again

The Frommers guide has good descriptions of the beaches. Boqueron is great if you travel that far. Also Rincon on the west. But Luquillo is fine and a good stop off en route to El Yunque...and btw that is indeed a beautiful forested park. I am guessing a hotel will of cab or other suggestions. Sure see Ponce if time but is a trip over the mountains.
