Barbados in August? quick help needed!

Help please -- I'm parlyzed with indecision! Husband and I (both low 30's) are desperately trying to plan our last "pre-baby" vacation to a tropical destination. We MUST go the week of August 23 - 30, so Hawaii (which would be ideal) isn't an option. We've been looking for a relaxing, "upscale", beach destination, that has a little something to do other than the beach (a site or 2 to see, maybe a little shopping). We've pretty much settled on Barbados, partially because it's out of the prime hurricane belt -- but I'm having trouble committing, which I really need to do today! I know it's not ideal to go to the Caribbean in August, but we'd like to hit a beach with warm water, soft sand, and a tropical feel, plus be somewhere that western medicine has reached!

Thanks for any and all advice about Barbados, where to stay there (thinking Glitter Bay?), another island suggestion, or anything you can think of!

Sandy Beach Hotel in Worthing has a great beach and restaurant. Close to St. Laurence Gap

I think Barbados is a great choice for you in your situation! Glitter Bay would be a good choice from what I know about it. Cobbler's Cove is the only hotel I know on Barbados, and it would also suit you perfectly--it's on a lovely, long stretch of beach, it has a great restaurant, all rooms are actually suites, with a private balcony or patio. AND the bedrooms are air conditioned, which if I were pregnant and traveling in August, would be my main consideration, right after health care!

A woman named Lois seems to be the Barbados expert on this board and I'm sure she can help you. You'll have a great time if you stick with Glitter Bay, from everything I've read about it.

We're going to be in Barbados the same time as you, to celebrate my birthday. I know for a fact that we've been in Barbados that week in the past, and the weather was great. By the way, I remember one summer where we lucked out 'cause New York (where we're from) was having a heatwave (temperature in the 100's) and we were in ideal low 80's weather! :)

Haven't been to Glitter Bay, but it's supposed to be beautiful. And being you say you're looking for an "upscale" vacation, I would recommend you stay on the West Coast, where Glitter Bay is. You can always cab it to the South Coast for certain restaurant or nightlife, if you'd like.

Have a wonderful "pre-baby" vacation!

Grenada was the best vacation I've ever taken (ouside of Europe) It was relaxing, the people were nice and friendly (which is not the case in most of the caribbean), the food was fantastic, the beaches a dream and the price was right. They infamously have American medical students on the island and a big brand new hospital. It's quite a lot of travel, depending on where you come from, so look into the plane thing. Otherwise my only other advise is take bug lotion, because at night the mosquitos come out. Hope you have a great time.
