loved barbados! if you like amazing food, and very nice people, go to barbados. the beach glass can be found everywhere! i stayed at the glitter bay hotel, right on the beach. and for a nice diner, go to carambola. it's very close to the equator so they recommend you take a break from the sun mid-day, or at least sit in the shade. august is low season for the carribean, and it should be nice and quiet. enjoy!

My one trip to Barbados was at the end of August one year. Weather was muggy and for once I was glad I had air conditioning in my bedroom. Stayed at Cobblers Cove and couldn't have been happier. Rooms are actually all suites, very spacious, the restaurant on site is fantastic (they're a member of Relais & Chateaux, and its reflected in their food, their service, and the overall quality of the resort), and it's on a beach shared only with private villas. Gorgeous pink-white sand, lovely calm water on the west coast, so it also affords wonderful sunsets. We had evening showers each night, which were wonderful to listen to, and one afternoon of heavy storm, but the rest of the week was perfect. website is www.cobblerscove.com. There was a recent trip report on this site from a traveler who cut his stay short at Palm Island and moved to Cobblers for the rest of his vacation.
I agree with previous poster about dining at Carambola. Also, The Cliff is a very romantic setting for dining. We liked Brown Sugar for a more informal meal that offered good value.

I've only been there at the end of June. As for where to stay, I say Hotel Savannah, which can be booked on Expedia.com. A friend stayed there a month before I went and loved it so much until a month later I went on Expedia and a few clicks later was on my way...only 48-hours after I had made the reservation! Loved it....small boutique hotel and super quiet...great price package.

We just got back from Barbados last weekend. While we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we found many of the beaches quite "busy" as far as beach peddlers, jet-skiers, water-skiers, etc. But off the beaten path were some fantastic places like Batt's Rock Beach (wonderful!), Crane Beach, and others. I would just urge you not to limit yourselves to any particular beach. Find out where the locals go. If you are looking for some good places to dine, we thoroughly enjoyed Cocomo's in Holetown (actually ended up eating there three times!) Have a wonderful trip, as we found that Barbados certainly has some of the most friendly people we have ever come across during any of our island travels.

SusanLynne,
How was your weather?? The forecasts lately have been showers, showers, showers! Everyone keeps saying on this forum, though, that the showers pass quickly and you have lots of sunshing. Where did you stay?

Jen: Our weather was very good. Sunshine the vast majority of the day, with the occasional "sun shower." The heaviest of the rains were at night, when we were already inside for the evening. We stayed at the Settler's Beach Villa Hotel in Holetown, which is right next door to the Sandpiper. Settler's Beach staff were wonderful, proximity to nearby shopping (grocery and souvenir) was great, just a five minute walk. The units, all either one or two-story villas with two air-conditioned bedrooms, are comfortable with full kitchens (including laundry washing machine)but older than some of the other accommodations/resorts we saw. The pool area gets non-stop sun, while the beach area is mostly shade. What I did not like about Settler's Beach was the beach itself. Very busy with lots of jet-skiers, water-skiers, beach peddlers, etc. and very small. But for one who likes water activities it is ideal. Having said that, we rented a vehicle for several days and found some lovely, very quiet beaches and ended up enjoying the best of both worlds!

Thanks Susan,
It was just so wierd seeing Barbados forecasts like that for weeks on end. We really love Barbados and want to go back. I just wasn't sure of this time of year.
Hope you get back to Barbados soon!

Jen68: A return trip to Barbados is not on the radar screen for a while. We are off to Kenya and Tanzania in October and I may return by myself to Tanzania in February. Our next "beach" holiday will probably be Crooked Island in the Bahamas. But one day I will go back.
