Bahamas in January - Cold?

Was thinking of Nassau or Freeport for mid January. Is the weather cool then and unsure like Florida since it is so close to it?

Bill: My wife and I went to Nassau in December '96. It was around 75F during the day and about 60+ at night. We were able to wear shorts and t-shirts, so it wasn't bad. It is a little warmer than Florida since the Gulf Stream has a warming effect on the islands. The water in the hotel pool was too cool to swim in, but the ocean was OK. The good news is, you shouldn't expect much rain, but January and February are the coolest months.

I prefer Nassau to Freeport since it has better beaches, smaller island, etc. They both have good restaurants, hotels and casinos.

Have fun!

It will be cold then. Why not go to Aruba or its neighbors instead? It is their summer then.

We do NOT recommend Nassau in Jan!
We stayed at Sandals in the middle weeks of Jan 98. The hottest it got for the week we were there was around 80. The water was freezing! Both the pools and ocean were untolerable.. We could not use any of the water sports.. a total waste of $$$ Try somewhere else if you want to swim.

Been to Abaco in January. Air temp will be 80 but water temp low sixties. Not good for swimming.

In Jan. and Feb. avoid the Bahamas and Bermuda unless you're looking for springlike weather. Go to any Caribbean island where it's always an endless summer.

Florida can get some nasty cold snaps Dec. - feb. if Florida gets them, the bahamas will be chilly as well. Head out at least to Puerto rico - better even further!
