Atlantis in Bahamas OR Cal. Coast Drive
Hi!
Please help us choose our summer vacation! We are a family of New Englanders (Daughter 13 and Son 11) trying to decide between the following: A stay at Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas OR A drive from San Diego to San Francisco with a stop at Disney's California. What do you think? We all enjoy exploring new places, snorkeling, shopping, and fine dining. A little R&R would be nice, too!
We'd appreciate any input! Thanks in advance.

I am a New Englander, too (Boston), and have been to both Atlantis and San Diego. San Diego is beautiful, and Disney is a blast, but Atlantis is amazing. For the kids, there are water slides, cool shark tanks, underground caves/aquariums, ponds, water sports, you name it. For the adults there's all of the above, plus a great casino, massages by the ocean, many bars and restaurants, a great beach, an indoor "mall", etc. There's so much to see at Atlantis (including the occasional celebrity--Michael Jordan was there when I was there), that it's almost overwhelming. Disney is something you can do any time, but the Bahamas is something special. And not to mention CLOSER!!!
Whatever you decide, have a great time!!

I agree totally with Gina. Especially if you want to add some relaxation. Riding in a car with children all day is not not always the most relaxing atmosphere!
Atlantis in incredible. Your children will love it. The NBA was having a convention the last time we were there. HUGE basketball players all over the place!

I have never stayed at the Atlantis, but I have toured the hotel twice, and the aquarium itself--the worlds largest, they say--is incredible. Not to mention myriad pools, water slides, and the amazing blue ocean (you mention snorkeling). You might consider the day excursion to Harbour Island (Off of Eleuthera) on the ferry also. The outer island people are wonderful.

Paradise island is beautiful for sure, and I personally think a trip to the Bahamas would be a better vacation, but you should try to see the coastal highway at some point--it's absolutely beautiful. I went last summer and drove from San Fransisco South along highway 1, and the views were amazing. But for snorkling and R & R, I would suggest the Bahamas. Driving in SoCal isn't exactly always relaxing...
