Atlantis dining

I would love to hear about the restaurants at Atlantis. There are so many to choose from that it is hard selecting just 4 for the 4 nights we will be staying there. Your opinions would be very appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

Georgann Mar 12th, 2001 04:24 AM

We LOVED two: Difinately the French Rest. Order the souflee for dessert as soon as you arrive, and there was an appetizer I would fly back for-i THINK IT WAS SHRIMP IN A CHEESE sauce (unbelievable)
Also the rest where a James Bond movie was filmed, a nice courtyard. Someone will tell you the name-very nice. Enjoy I envy you!

Georgann Mar 12th, 2001 04:25 AM

I almost forgot...make reservation well in advance...

mmmmm Mar 12th, 2001 05:03 AM

Our favorite was Five Twins. It's Asian and fantastic. A little dark (the waiter gave my mom a pen light to read the menu).
We also had a wonderful, romantic (not me and my mom) meal at the Ocean Club restaurant. It's not the new one that just opened (Dunes), the outdoor one.

Lisa Mar 12th, 2001 06:33 AM

dear mmmmm,

I am happy to hear that you liked the Five Twins restaurant and the Courtyard Terrace at the Ocean Club. I made reservations for those two restaurants and for Fathoms and the Bahamian Club. I also wanted to try Villa d'Este, but we'll only be at Atlantis for 4 nights so I had to leave i5t out. I already made reservations since I heard that they can be hard to come by if you wait too long.

Are there any other tips that you'd like to share. I am open to any and all info that will make this a great vacation.

Thanks again!

Sheila Mar 12th, 2001 09:26 AM

BE SURE TO EAT AT "DUNE" DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Anne Mar 12th, 2001 09:51 AM

Listen to Sheila....Dont Miss Dunes...By far the best in all of Nassau!!!

ummmmm Mar 12th, 2001 10:40 AM

Lisa -
I Can't comment on Dunes cause it wasn't there at my last visit. But I have eaten at all four of the restaurants that you chose, so if you're looking for one to cancel in favor of Dunes, then my (as well as my whole party's) least favorite was fathoms. This may be misleading though, because we ate there our first night and we were all a bit tired and cranky. The actual restuarant is very neat though, as you are surrounded by some amazing fish and giant tanks.

The Atlantis is amazing and you should be very excited about going. I can tell you that I am going again for 4 nights on Memorial Day weekend, and we have decided not to plan a nice dinner on the first night because of our experiences last time. Instead we have a reservation at the Hall of Waters which is significantly more casual than any of the restaurants we have discussed. The other 3 nights we are doing 5 twins, cause it was the best; Dunes, cause we heard it was great; and Villa d'est, because it was very good and my fiance lives for italian food.

Keep in mind that everything at the Atlantis, especially food, is incredibly expensive. I recommend a meal plan, otherwise your 4 meals could amount to the GNP of a small nation.
I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Lisa Mar 12th, 2001 01:01 PM

Hi ummmmm!

Thanks for your speedy reply. I have already taken the gourmet meal plan. The problem is that the plan does not include Dune. I would love to try it, though. As you can tell, I like eating at nice restaurants when I'm on vacation.

Based on your opinion, I'm wondering if I should change Fathoms to Villa d'Este. Originally, I was going to go to Villa d'Este because I heard that the service and food are good, but when I looked at the menu, it did not seem as intersting as Fathoms. And it isn't everyday that you can eat beside giant tanks of fish.

Would you mind telling me what you did not like about the restaurant? Also, I wonder if Dune is open for lunch. Lunch isn't covered on the meal plan anyway, and maybe we can just go for a light meal. The only problem is that Dune is probably a restaurant that you have to get a little dressed up for, and I don't know if I want to be bothered with that during the day.

I guess sometimes you just can't do everything!

You asked if I have any other questions, so I'm going to take you up on your offer. Is it really that difficult to get a lounge chair around the pool? I really do NOT want to have to get up at 7 AM to get chairs. Also, are there any excursions that you would recommend, or is there enough to keep us busy at the resort for 4 nites/5days?

I am very glad that, as a couple, you like the resort so much. I have heard about a lot of people going to Atlantis for their honeymoon, but many message board posts mention that there are too many kids around for couples to really enjoy it.

As it is, I am going to feel guilty for not bringing my sons. We stopped there 4 years ago, while on a cruise, and we all fell in love with it. I always thought that when I went back we would be with the kids, but we are celebrating our 20th anniversary and I am looking forward to some alone time with my husband. Besides, the kids are going on a cruise with us in April.

Sorry for "talking" your ear off. Thanks again for your help, and I'll be looking forward to your reply.

Lisa

P.S. Where are you planning to go for your honeymoon? Just wondering.

Lisa Mar 12th, 2001 01:03 PM

Sheila and Ann

Can you tell me why you love Dune so much? I'd love to know!

Thanks

Gail Mar 12th, 2001 01:08 PM

You don't have to get up at 7AM to get a chair at the pool. There are many pools and it depends which one you want. The chairs do fill up quickly, but you should be fine if you get there at 9:00. There are usually plenty of chairs on the beach.
As far as the meal plan is concerned. We've taken it a couple times, but during out last visit, we didn't and it was considerably cheaper WITHOUT the meal plan. We definitely over ate with the meal plan. We don't normally have a huge breakfast or eat an appetizer, entree and dessert with each dinner. We did with the meal plan and ate WAY too much. Without it we just brought granola bars or something of that sort for breakfast, then ate a nice lunch at the Rendevouz Bar and Grille or the Cave, then we had a very nice dinner.

Lisa Mar 12th, 2001 02:01 PM

Gail

Thanks for the info! 9:00 is definitely better than 7:00!

Gail, am I correct in remembering that in an earlier post, you mentioned that you were disappointed with Five Twins? What disappointed you -food, service, or ambience? Just curious.

Also, may I ask which tower you were in. So many people say stay only in the Royal Towers because it is the newest and the nicest. I will be staying in the Coral Towers because when we booked our trip, one of the nights we needed was all booked. There does seem to be some advantage to staying in the Coral Towers, though. For one thing, it seems to be more centrally located, and the Coral Towers rooms have balconies whereas, the Royal Towers do not. What do you think? I was told I can keep calling to see if there has been a cancellation. Do you think its worth it?

I was also wondering if there are any excursions you would recommend.

Thanks again for your help. I'll be looking forward to your response.

mmmmm Mar 13th, 2001 05:04 AM

Lisa -
I agree with the poster who said that a 7AM wakeup call shouldn't be necessary to get chairs, but it certainly wouldn't hurt if you want the chairs of your choice in the location of your choice. The prime sun/pool spots fill up quickly, so it's just a mater of determining how important that is to you. If you are a beach person then you are fine, I have never seen the beach fill up the way the pool does.

As for fathoms, I can't remember exactly why I was turned off from Fathoms. I do remember a fairly small menu and not really enjoying my entree (steak). The stone crab claw appetizer I had was very good though. What I most remember about Fathoms (other than the cool, dungeon-like atmosphere, was that all four people at my table didn't care for their dinners.

As for which tower to stay in: unless it's a money issue, then call, call and call again until you can get into the Royal towers for your full stay, it is worth it!

The only excursion I ever took was an extremely expensive half-day deep-sea fishing trip. I'm sure I would have had a great time and it wouldn't have been a waste of money if we caught anything. Unfortunately we didn't get a bite.

Finally, I am going to Hawaii for my honeymoon. We've both seen much of the Caribean but neither of us have been to the Pacific. Anything else? Bring it on.. .. . . .

Lisa Mar 13th, 2001 12:25 PM

mmmmm

Thanks again for getting back to me. You will LOVE Hawaii! I went there for my honeymoon and had a great time. The islands are gorgeous -very lush and tropical, and no poverty. When are you getting married?

Guess what! I was able to get a reservation for the Royal Towers! We will be staying on one of the Imperial Club floors because that was all that was available. Its more money, but it doesn't hurt to be pampered every once in a while. My only regret is that I gave up a waterview room in the Coral Towers for a harborview in the Royal Towers. There was not one waterview room left, even in the Imperial Club. My travel agent said that she would keep checking for cancellations.I'm not getting my hopes up though.

Can you tell me about the harbourview? Do you think I'll be disappointed? I always get rooms with a balcony so that I can sit out first thing in the morning. I love the calming feeling of just looking out over the water. I don't know how much water I'll actually be seeing with a harbourview, though. Please tell me what you can so I won't be too surprised.

One of the perks that come with an Imperial Club room is a free continental breakfast, so I dropped the gourmet meal plan. Now I can dine at Dune for dinner, which I am happy about. I know that the restaurants I want to dine at are expensive, but I will be saving alot of money on breakfast, and even on dinner, since my husband and I often share dessert. Also, the Imperial Club has complimentary desserts between 8-11 pm, as well as a complimentary tea time with finger sandwhiches and cakes, and a coctail hour between 5 and 7 or 8pm.

We'll probably eat at Dune, Courtyard Terrace, Five Twins, and either Villa d'Este or the Bahamian Club. The only reason I would choose the Bahamian Club over Villa is that my husband loves Chateaubriand, and that seems to be one of the Bahamian Club's specialties. I want to make up my mind tonight though, so I can be sure to get the reservations we want.

I have 2 other questions. First, have you used the spa facilities? And, did you go to the comedy club, and what do you think?

Thanks again for answering all of my questions. I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Lisa

ummmm Mar 14th, 2001 05:23 AM

Good morning. . . .

Congratulations on getting into the Royal Towers, you will not be disappointed. I have never stayed on an Imperial Club floor, but it sounds like many other club floors that hotels offer. Many find the club floor to be a waste of money, but if you use the amenities that it offers, and take all the meals, snacks and drinks that you're entitled, then it should easily make it worth your while. The Imperial floor should also have its own Concierge which is a great perk.

I couldn't tell from your last post if you are aware that the Royal Tower rooms do not have balconies. I hope this doesn't come as a surprise considering how much you say you like sitting out there early in the morning. If it helps at all, I still don't feel that it is worth staying in the Coral Tower over the Royal Towers simply for a balcony.

The harborview is not bad. Depending on the location of your room (the towers stretch very far across) you should be looking at the back-end of Paradise Island. This is by no means an ugly site. You will see a bridge and a waterway where boats are constantly moving. You will also see planes taking off and landing on the water (my personal favorite, don't worry, you can't really hear them). The view is not the ocean: it's not quiet or serene, it's not really even romantic, but it is nice. I would take a Royal Tower harborview over an Coral Tower ocean view any day.

I never went to the comedy club but the spa facilities are fantastic. Do yourself a favor and make your spa appointments early. Massages are pretty hard to come by on a busy weekend.

I don't disagree with your restaurant choices. The Terraces are great for a romantic dinner for two, and I am a fan of the others as we've discussed. Make the dinner reservations soon too.

ummmmmmmm

p.s. The honeymoon (and wedding) is in early November 2001. When are you going to Atlantis?

Gail Mar 14th, 2001 01:25 PM

Hi Lisa,
Boy, you really must have gone back over all the posts to see that I was disappointed in Five Twins. It was hyped as the finest restaurant at Atlantis and both of us enjoyed the food there less than any of the other restaurants. Service was good--it was the food that was nothing special. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who had a different experience at Five Twins. I can only tell you that on all of our return visits we ate at other places.
We stayed in the Coral Tower for the reason you stated--the central location. We spend very little time in the room, so it doesn't matter if it's not luxurious. It had everything we needed.
No matter where you eat,or which tower you are in, you will love ATlantis.

Lisa Mar 15th, 2001 02:40 PM

Hi ummmmmm

I agree that the club floor is probably a waste of money, but it was the only way to get into the Royal Towers. I will take advantage of the breakfast, though, and hopefully I will be able to take advantage of some of the other goodies. And as you said, the club does have its own concierge, so that will be timesaving. I asked my travel agent to keep trying for the waterview, though.

I am aware that many of the rooms do not have a balcony, but some of them do. I am requesting a balcony and hoping for the best. They said that many of the rooms that do not have a full balcony have a French balcony, whatever that is.

I am glad that you think the harborview is decent. I would still prefer an ocean view though. Someone told me that you have to be careful about the harborviews because the hotel is very long, and in certain rooms you have a view mostly of a cement factory. Now that would really bother me -especially at the rate I'm paying.

How many times have you been to Atlantis? Which type of view do you usually have? You asked when I'm going to Atlantis - its the beginning of June.

You said that you never went to the comedy club. What do you usually do after dinner? I've heard that there is a dance club, and of course there is a casino. Is there any other night time entertainment? Also, are there usually long lines for dinner? Another post I read somewhere mentioned that there are often long lines at the restaurants even with the reservations. What time do you usually go to dinner? I usually eat late because I don't like to have to end my day in the sun too early. Late afternoon and early evening is usually my favorite time to relax outside.

I'm glad that the spa is good. I am looking forward to making use of it. They have a treatment for two people at the same time, and I thought it would be fun to do with my husband. I have already made dinner reservations but could not make spa reservations since they only allow reservations up to 7 days prior.

It was good "talking" and I hope to hear from you soon.

Lisa

Gail Mar 15th, 2001 06:17 PM

Hi Lisa,
WE've always made our restaurant reservations before we arrive. We've never had to wait more than about 10 minutes with a reservation and even that was rare.

Lisa Mar 16th, 2001 06:43 PM

Hi Gail!

It really wasn't a very long search to find your post about Five Twins. I just typed Atlantis in the text search box, and I automatically came up with all the posts regarding Atlantis.

Thanks for the tips. I was glad to hear that there is not much of a wait for dinner.

Lisa
