Aruba Rental Car
 

We will be stopping in Aruba for one day on a cruise. This will be our third one-day visit, but the first for a couple of our traveling companions. A friend told us that they rented a car for the day to drive around the island, rather than taking a "tour." An article I found on the internet indicated that if you have an accident, even if you have purchased the collision insurance, you are liable for the first $300-$500 worth of damage. Does anyone know if this is true? Would renting a car for the day be easier/cheaper than a half-day tour? Thanks for any help.

Avis was the one I used last there they were great.

Careful with some of the locals tend to run scams

like the infamous "charge you for the accident you did not

have" when you get home. Lots of issues with smaller operators

in that regard.

When you purchase CDW it does not automatically mean that there is no deductible in the case of an accident or damage to tyres, windscreen etc. Always check what you are covered for. It's nothing new. We have rented in Aruba from Avis & it was all fine, cannot remember details of the rental contract but if the first $500 was down to us then we would have thought that normal. Never had the issues mentioned above and have been renting cars since forever. Some islands it was better to rent from a local company as we did this year in Tobago. Prices, car and their reputation were good.

I'll take a look and see if I still have my rental contract...sadly I may still have it laying around. I believe we rented from Enterprise rental. It was something like a $150 for the day. My card was double charged for the deposit. Of course I didn't notice it until I got home. I called around to get it fixed, and the American part of the company couldn't help me. I decided to give it a few days, and sure enough, both deposits were refunded.

The vehicle rental was definately worth it. We had a jeep that we put 181 miles on. It may have been my favorite day there. We just follwed a couple different tour groups around for part of the day. The island is too small to get really lost, however, you'll find rather quickly that many of the streets are not named. You might have fun on a 4 wheeler tour. I'm planning to check that out next time around.

I know I didn't specifically answer your question, but I'll poke around and see if I can find a copy of the rental agreement.
