We have a group of 8 couples that have traveled to Mexico for years. We have tried many locations and might possibly consider Jamica this February instead of Mexico because there will now be a direct flight there. Thoughts??? we like a safe location with a nice beach, some culture Is nice, good food and you know what else makes a nice vacation. We are mostly young 60 year olds.

I suggest Negril. I was there a couple years ago on a reunion trip of a dozen friends to celebrat a few folks turning 60. They stayed at Tensing Pen. I was next door at Mirage (these are both on "the Cliffs"). There's also the gorgeous "7-mile beach" area with hotel. Look at www.negrilonestop.com and click on the map to see the lodging options.

Where have you been in Mexico? What type of accomendations are you looking for? AI, Non AI, Couples only, Adults only, boutique, villa, rented home, etc.

Jamaica is not like Mexico. We have been to Mexico several times and Jamaica twice. We did not feel comfortable walking off a resort in Jamaica like we do in Mexico.

There are 3 areas of Jamaica; Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios. All areas are quite different from each other. Would need to know the type of accomendations you are wanting in order to recommend which area would possibly fit.

My experience was different. I did not stay at a "resort" just a regular hotel in Negril. I was solo 5 days and 5 days with friends. I went all around town every day without issue.

I agree, and don't think I would feel the same about Montego Bay though. Jamaica can be very intimidating to 1st timers.

Direct flights from where? Negril fits the bill for "safe" location(nothing is 100% but we found no issues with walking around outside the hotel) nice beach, good food and culture.
If you can get to Barbados, this is a great island for beginners. You will definitely get all that plus more, and the weather will be warmer than Jamaica, you won't have the scarey areas like MBJ and Ochos Rios. Same for Antigua.

To add, there are 2 areas of Negril. You have the AI resorts on Bloody Bay and the then the actual town area of Negril which consists of the Cliffs and 7 Mile Beach.

The reason there are AI resorts on Bloody Bay is because there is basically nothing in that are with regards to dining and bar options. Most people that recommend Negril is usually referring to hotels on 7 Mile Beach and the Cliffs, which is a more laid back area and walking to dining options and bars aren't so much of an issue.

We preferred the area of Ocho Rios over Negril because there are more things to see and do there off the resort. However, the locals in Ocho Rios are way more aggressive than Negril. Negril was just too subdued for us though we did get off the resort and do various sightseeing and activities.

The nicer, more lux AI resorts are in Montego Bay. However, MB is really crowded and built up. So, it really depends on what you are looking for.

I think Barbados would be a good fit for you but it can be an expensive destination.

As for Jamaica, I've stayed in Montego Bay and we didn't have any issues leaving the property. We walked the strip and went shopping, to the casino, public beach, and dined out one evening. You really need to know what you are getting into with Jamaica though, locals can be aggressive.
