Armed Guards at Haitian Hotels?

Hey:

I'm headed to Haiti with a missionary group. We are booked into the Kaliko Beach hotel. Has anyone been there? What is the security like? I've been told not to stay anywhere that does not have armed guards.

Why do you need armed guards at the hotel? I assume if you are there to do missionary work you will be out among the people?

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I will be out among the people all day, every day. I will be in a group however. I just want to make sure that I have a safe place to sleep.

Haiti is a very poor country, but I do not believe there is a history of personal violence against tourists. Just don't take valuables along on your trip like carrying too much cash, wearing expensive jewelry, leaving a laptop, iphone or expensive camera, laying around. Guards at hotels are about theft more than personal safety.
