Are thongs acceptable?

Is it a bad idea to wear swim suits with thong bottoms on the beaches in the USVI? Would you suggest "regular" suits instead?

x Feb 14th, 2002 01:21 PM

I think the answer depends on how you look while wearing it.

Kim Feb 14th, 2002 02:47 PM

Thongs are pretty much acceptable everywhere in the caribbean. Who cares what you look like if you feel good then wear whatever you want!

Patty Feb 14th, 2002 03:43 PM

I suppose it's acceptable... however I don't recall ever seeing anyone wear them on USVI beaches. Depends on how comfortable you would feel if you're not in the majority.

susie Feb 14th, 2002 06:44 PM

i would agree with the last poster...haven't seen any in the USVI.. you may be the solo thong sporter.

Jake Feb 14th, 2002 06:50 PM

I've seen thongs on every island I've been to including VI especially recently since they are gaining popularity.

CnSand Feb 14th, 2002 08:00 PM

I think it's a bad idea because they look so damn uncomfortable. But they wear them in the USVI.

mike Feb 15th, 2002 06:49 AM

acceptable for women only - never saw a man wearing one in the USVI (thank god!)

Becca Feb 15th, 2002 06:56 AM

I think a thong would be fine. In fact, on some of the beaches on St. John (that were NOT known for nudity), I saw many women go topless.

Leni Feb 15th, 2002 11:35 AM

Mary, where are you from ? I mean, what country ? Americans tend to be much more conservative than Europeans when it comes to swimsuits, among other things. If you have a nice body, it should be pretty evident in a more conservative swimsuit as well--no need to expose it wearing a "dental floss". Don't worry, people will notice you. And besides, isn't it better to be noticed because of other things ? I'm sure there is more to you than your 'naked' behind !
Have fun in the USVI.
Anon Feb 15th, 2002 11:46 AM

Please get off the soapbox Leni. American's are soooooo uptight about swimwear or the lack of it. I saw women wearing thongs in St. Thomas so yes, if you have a desire to wear one, do it. And, for your info, if you take a day trip to St. John, they have topless/nude beaches.

ANON Feb 18th, 2002 04:25 AM

The last "anon" posting is incorrect. The National Park has recently clamped down on the nude beach(es) on St. John and are ticketing people who bare it all.

jak Feb 18th, 2002 06:39 PM

lots of thongs in the carribean. make sure you get a good bikini wax and spring for some self-tanner or a visit to the tanning salon before you bare. usvi has a lot of non-americans who wear thongs - bring it with you and see how you feel.

CarolD1 Mar 27th, 2009 06:55 AM

Amen to that, first Anon; Americans are so uptight about swimwear and everything else about the human body. And guess what? We have the highest rate of sexual assaults and other crimes against women of any developed country. Some day people might actually see the correlation.

Why top a 7 year old thread?

BeachGirl247 Mar 28th, 2009 10:53 AM

starrs, here's a topless thread going again. That's always a fun read!
