Take the skyride that operates on those days when cruise ships are in port. Go to the beach at Magen's Bay (beautiful, white sand, though can be crowded) or go to Coki Point (good beach, and you can also go to the Coral World underwater observatory) or Secret Harbor for another nice beach. Avoid the crowded downtown shopping district unless you really MUST shop for duty-free jewelry and watches.

lot's of options and alanb mentioned some. You could do an island tour with one of the newly certified taxi drivers who are official guides for the island and then head to Secret Harbour for beach time. It is great snorkeling and have lunch at Blue Moon there - one of the better restaurants on the island with a nice beach bar. You can arrange to have the taxi driver pick you up at a specified time or have someone call a taxi to take you back to the ship. You could also have the taxi drop you off at Red Hook for the ferry to St. John and head via taxi to some of the less busy beaches there - your ship may offer trips to Trunk Bay - but you could head to Caneel for a fabulous pricey lunch (it's a Rosewood property) and then to one of their beaches, Honeymoon, which is absolutely lovely and a short walk from the Caneel pavillion. Ferrys run hourly so not a problem if you watch your time getting back.
Or there are also full day and half day sails available and arranged so that the cruisers can arrive back on time.
You could hit the stores in CA - it is nice to walk around and "people watch" and check out the sparkley things or you could stay at Havensight for shopping or even check out the new Yacht Haven Grande.

What are you interested in seeing/doing? Snorkeling/swimming, sightseeing, beaching it or shopping?

We did a 7 night land vacation and really enjoyed Coki Beach/Coral World, the Island tour or St. Thomas and St. John and the boat trip to the BVI's. Of course you won't be able to do all of that in a cruise stop. Pick what your most interested in.

We thought the shopping was highly overrated. Unless you are in the market for jewlery don't bother. There are like 200+ jewelry stores. We found the shopping in Aruba much more diverse with better prices.
