Hi Tim:

We are also travelling to Gran Ventana next month - we (three couples) are leaving Feb 27th. We have not been to Dominicon Republic before but spoke with a couple who were at this resort last year. They had been at Playa Naco the year before (96) and hated it - terrible food and not clean.

The report we got from them was very positive. The beach was good and the rooms are very nice, clean and roomy with a large bathroom. They didn't see any bugs or lizards etc in thier rooms. The resort was quite casual - dress shorts for dinner are acceptable unless you are dining at the reservation restaurant which is a once per week thing. The food was excellent - very Americanized with Boneless Chicken breasts, pissa etc. There are no hair dryers in the room so take your own. There are safty deposit boxes in your room but you have to pay extra for them. Tips are not expected but they did tip their chambermaid and the waiter who looked after them each night for the two weeks they were there. They could get drinkable water and ice at
the bar. This is a small resort and they felt safe. The golfing nearby is good, if you golf. There is little shopping so be prepared to lay on the beach! Of course, film and suntan lotion etc are very expensive so buy it before you go. There are children but they are usually found near the swimming pool and many have nannys with them (from Europe). Part of the swiming pool is a wading pool. Are you travelling with children? There are vendors on the beach but if you are pleasent to them they won't hassle you.

Guess that's all I can think of that might be of interest. When are you folks travelling? If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll
check it out for you. Perhaps we'll even see you there!

Hope we all have a great trip

We have been to Puerto Plata at least 4-5 times. I was interested in finding out about the Grand Ventana too. I have to comment though, on the Playa Naco. My daughter & I were there 2 yrs. ago. It was quite a nice place, the food was good, & the staff and activities were great. We had a ball!! I honestly didn't have anything negative to say about the Playa Naco. In fact, we usually stay at the Paradise Bch. Resort but my daughter & I almost liked this place better. I would be interested in hearing more about the Grand Ventana.

Hi Michelle,

I saw your posting in Fodor's regarding your Puerto Plata experiences. My wife and I are experienced Carribean travelers (Aruba, Curacao, Antigua, St. Martin, many ports on several cruises, etc...) Our priorities are beach, casinos, some live music in the evenings, local food... and we like to explore a bit with a rental car. So far everything we've heard about the Puerto Plata area seems to hit us perfectly. We think we'd like to stay in the resort enclave area... and our hotel short list includes the Playa Naco, Paradise Beach, Flamenco/Playa Dorada.
Do you have any info or recommendations to help us make some choices?
