Anyone have an experience at Excellence/Majestic Elegance in DR?

Has anyone stayed at either the Excellence or the Majestic Elegance at Punta Cana and how was your experience? I am looking at the club level for both. Thanks for any input. Travel date will be next Sept. for my husband's birthday. Cheers from Idaho!

Group of six stayed here in 2012, beautiful resort, beautiful beach. Definitely upgrade to the " adults only " rooms are closer to the beach. With the exception of guided tours / excursions you cannot safely leave the resort.

Bettina - was it the Majestic Elegance you stayed at? Also, I have heard that about safety. Did you ever feel not safe while you were there? Just had a friend who had someone from her work go to the DR and she said she was uncomfortable with all the police presence. Thanks!

Stayed at Majestic elegance club level several years ago. Good resort. Nice pools. Beach area was nice as well. Less crowded beach than other resorts nearby. Felt very safe.

We have stayed at Excellence at the club level. I really don't think it's worth it to upgrade to club unless they offer you a great rate for it.
We enjoyed the resort and loved the beach and pool areas.

Stayed at Majestic Elegance, yes the resort is safe. Just not comfortable leaving the resort.

I was there 5 years ago and again last week. They have gone downhill significantly in my opinion. Food was poor for the price you pay, much better years ago. Service is about the same as all the poorer island resorts, should expect that. Again the service and material condition of the property were much better before. Save your money try another location, let us know how it is.
