We are interested in staying at a private villa somewhere in the Caribbean. So far I discovered one in the Dominican Republic. Any advice as to the DR scene? Thanks.

The following are specific vacation rentals and hotels which I recall as
standing-out as looking like exceptional values and being relatively
secluded.

See my post 'Noah's Links' for a more complete listing of villa rentals throughout the Caribbean.
-------------------

Dominica:

http://www.delphis.dm/oceanview/english.html

http://delphis.netgate.net/seacliff.htm

Dominca is known as the 'nature isle' and is still very much off-the-beaten
path.

For more info. on Dominica take a look at the 'A Virtual Dominica' , part of
the Dominica webring. We went to Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic. They have tons of private villas and condos. We didn't stay in one but have thought about going back. The regular hotel "casita" rooms which we stayed in were still very nice. The resort was very authentic (tile floors, lots of windows to open, etc.). You can do all inclusive or just pay as you go.

As long as you stay in the resort (3,000 acres). Things are very clean and nice. We went to the marina to go on a day trip and you really see that you're in a third world country.

Best of all - American Airlines has direct flights out of Miami that land at the on-site airport. You can take a golf cart to your house or hotel room.
