Any info on St. Maarten-Dutch Side

Hi all
We are planning a trip to either St. Maarten or Punta Cana. I can get alot of info on DR but am at a loss at finding any info on St. Maarten. We are looking into staying at the Great Bay Hotel as it is an all inclusive.
I have heard varying reports on the safety of this island also. Anyone with any info please either post here or e-mail me. Also if there are any other sites that you know of with discussions on the caribbean that would be great to.

First, if you do go to St Maarten, DO NOT do all-inclusive. The island isn't meant for that especially with the beaches and restaurants. Great Bay and the beach in front of it has gotten much better recently.

Also the crime really isn't much different than general Caribbean islands. Some other will have less, some others will have more. It mostly amounts to burglary and robbery and mostly from cars at that.

Here are the best 2 boards for St. Maarten info.

My advice -- be sure to go to the French side of St. Martin. The beach "shack" in Grand Case are the best place for lunch. Good local food and pretty cheap. When we went back the second time, we didn't spend a minute on the Dutch side (well, I think the airport is there, but that's all). There are lots of big resorts, casinoes. But if that's what you're looking for, maybe the Dutch side is right for you. But to get the real flavor of the island, I recommend the other side. The beaches and dining options on the French side were fabulous. Orient Beach is one of my favorites in the world! I love St. Martin!

hi sue:

st. maarten/martin isn't that big of an island, only 37 square miles, so you're not that far away from anything on either side regardless of where you stay. pick a place that looks good to you and have fun.

definitely do NOT do all-inclusive. there are boatloads of great restaurants on the island, in all price ranges, in many different cuisines.

unless you wander off somewhere you shouldn't be, or leave something unattended in your rental car, crime should not be a problem.
