Any advice about the Dominican Republic

My wife and I are in the midst of researching a vacation to the Caribbean and one of our options is the Dominican Republic. Does anyone have any thoughts on this area? Every year for the past 5 we've vacationed in Mexico and thought we'd try something new this time. We like the all-inclusive the best and mostly prefer couples only but will consider anything as long as it's not packed with kids. Also, we're considering going in May. Any thougths on the Dominican or any resorts?

Thanks

Please read our one day experience in the DR. Its located in the last 50 messages (#56) under cruise ship excursions. Spend the extra $$ and book a private AI resort. Have a great time-

We are going back to the D.R. for the 8th time the end of January. For many years we went to P.V., Cancun (years ago), Cozumel, Cabo, Manzanillo, and just recently PDC...and we now prefer the D.R. The best site is. www.debbiesdominicantravel.com./ for information on resorts. The only spot we did not enjoy was Puerta Platta and find that La Romana and Punta Cana our favorite. There are mostly all inclusive resorts. As long as your not there during school vacation there are few children and there are I believe adults only in Punta Cana..I think it's a new Sunscape.

Avoid Boca Chica. We stayed at a resort there several yrs. ago and was not at all impressed. Heard great things about La romana and Punta Cana.

The only thing we found in the DR is that there are not many "off-site" attractions. That was just fine with us, after our first two trips there. (We are returning for our third in the spring.) I am a firm believer in getting to see some of the country you are travelling in. Santo Domingo ends up being a full day trip if you are staying in Punta Cana....but Punta Cana has one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.

With careful research, you can get amazing value for your dollar in the DR. We've stayed in La Romana and Punta Cana, and will be returning to Punta Cana this spring. Choose a resort that suits your needs and you will love it!! You will find that most resorts are AI in the DR, because there really isn't that much to offer off-site, unless you are travelling with someone familiar with the area. We've booked for Secrets because of its adults only policy, though we were looking at several other very nice resports. Good luck!!
