You really don't need to go all-inclusive on Antigua. It is a very safe island and the people are quite friendly. It's not like Jamaica at all! It is such a waste not to leave the resort and explore the island! Shirley Heights on Sunday evening is the BEST party in the Caribbean!

Also, there are SO many good restaurants there that it is a shame not to try them! The best thing would be a MAP plan that would include some drinks and 2 meals a day. That would leave you free to explore for the other meal.

Both Jumby Bay and Curtain Bluff would be "high end" wonderful options!

Just because you stay at an all-inclusive does not mean you can venture out and explore the island.Just makes thing a little easier.

I would highly recommend Galley Bay. The accomodations, food, beach, service and scenery are wonderful. We were there in 2/99 and will be returning in 1/01. My husband and I checked out Curtain Bluff and were far from impressed. The owner was snobby and the rooms were like motel rooms. For all the hoopla about this resort my husband and I were really surprised. Anyway, good luck with your selection.

I also agree re all inclusives, you can still book excursions and island tours (that include local food) and enjoy an all inclusive. It is wonderful to not worry about money at the resort, and you do pay less when it is a package deal. My husband (cpa) have traveled both ways and found it cost effective to do an all-inclusive.

My husband and I are staying at Galley Bay in Dec. I am hearing many good things on the boards. Lisa can you please let me know how they dress at Galley Bay. I am so glad not to be going to Curtain Bluff now that I read your message abount the snobbery. Is there any entertainment? What sight are close to Galley Bay we may rent a car for a few days? Thanks

Hi,
My husband and I stayed at Allegro Pineapple Beach Resort a year ago in May. While the beach was beautiful, I was not altogether happy with the resort. Their person to book sightseeing tours was totally NOT helpful about booking us a day trip to Barbuda, so we decided it wasn't worth the aggravation at that point to do it ourselves.

The food was not great, and the dress code of long pants for men, even in their open air restaurant was a real pain for a lot of the men there. Of course our travel agent neglected to tell us this, so we didn't pack appropriately.

They were also in the process of building new rooms. A real shame because one of the nice things was the relatively uncrowded beach. It is also a very quiet resort (which was great for us) but if you are looking for nightlife you are a decent taxi ride from town.

We visited Antigua in Jan 98 staying at
Pineapple Beach Club. We had a wonderfull time great food, service, rooms and beach. This January we will be staying at Galley Bay. So Lisa if you
read this please post any tips or helpfull hints you may like to share
on Galley Bay.
Judy>>> What are you looking for in the
all inclusives? They are all a little different in some way. IE Couples only.
Families with kids, Small and intimate,
Large and busy?

There is nightly entertainment at Galley Bay which is quite good. I guess that I would call the dress code "smart casual". Woman can basically get away with anything but shorts and men are required to wear pants and a collared shirt. Gerry and I rented a car for several days and frankly just visited other beaches because at the time, the sea at Galley was really rough. We checked out Half Moon Bay, Johnsons Point, Darkwood Beach, Dickensons Bay, etc. When we go again we will check out Shirley Heights and the English Harbor area. . .

Lisa thanks for the information. When you return to Antigua do check out Shirley Heights the view is gorgeous and
they have a steel band and cook out that
is very good. Also visit the devils bridge park also pretty views from the point where the blow holes are. Oh yea
if you go to the jump up at Shirley Heights maybe a taxi is a good idea cause the drinks go down awfully smooth
up there!
